Normally I just bung in Semi Synth 10w40 into all my bikes, I get 25l Drums of it for about £40 & it does my car as well.

Bought myself an R65, although currently in pieces the engine is to be reassembled upon parts arriving and I noticed that the manual and allot of owners recommend 20w50?

Seems very thick for our cold climate, at the same time I think these Aircooled boxers heat up quite abit, so is it to keep them cooler at optimum running temperature?

Must price a barrel with my local Motorfactors

It's not to keep them cooler, it's to prevent the oil getting too thin as it gets hot.

The boxers used 20W50 engine oil but you'll probably be fine with 10W40. Thumbs Up

Mineral 20W50 whatever you can pick up.

It's a seperate engine and gearbox so doesn't need 'bike' oil.

Indeed I have been on Motoworks, Motobins 7 James Sherlock for various parts for the bike.

My thinking was that my 10w40 should be better for our colder temperatures, but at the same time If most owners feed their Boxers 20w50 and thats what it was designed for then who am I to argue!

Aye I'am quite enjoying working on the engine as there is no internal gearbox fun and games, or wet clutch for that matter. So bloody simple. I definitely appreciate that they made these bikes to be easily worked on enginewise.

Unfortunatly the previos owner did not locktite the locating dowels on the thrust washers in the big end. So this meant an entire engine strip down to get at them. Glad though as I'm not afraid of opening it up in the future.

Top end/ valve wear seems the R65's weak point.....well if 75k+ miles before changing can ever be called a weak point! Wink Laughing
