If I was to break a bike for bits which is in my name how would I get rid of the frame please? I think the law has changed so I can't just tell the DVLA I've scrapped it myself anymore as I believe was the case previously?
Thanks!

Destroy the numbers. Put in scrap metal skip at the tip. Send v5 to dvla telling them it's been exported.

Are you not allowed to sell the frame and logbook to people wanting to build their own (trikes etc) these days?
That used to be the way of getting rid of frames (except my xj900 frame which my ex kindly cut in half so that it would fit in the boot of my Corsa) *sigh*

You can still sell the frame with the log book.
You risk it being used to go with stolen bits.
But there's a lot of legitimate reasons too - such as people that have damaged their frames, have them written off and want a clean HPI and so on.
If it's an alloy frame, you'll get a bit of cash taking it to a scrap yard.
If it's metal, they'll also officially 'scrap' it, but you'll get a pittance as far as money goes.

I'm not bothered as to getting anything for it, it's a cheap shit rotten frame made from toffee. I just don't want the DVLA hounding me from hell to breakfast.
I've read the v5 and it says a can take the vehicle to an Authorised Treatment Facility, ATF, and they will issue a cert' of destruction, whatever one of them is! I best google it and find out where they are....

Any metal scrap yard should do this.
Depends where you live - there's three in Keighley.
In the much larger but rather more White Collar and less thievy Reading, we had to go a bit out of town to go there. But these days with the price of scrap metal, there should be one not TOO far away.

I sold a WR frame with its corresponding licence plate, half a crank case and log book.
Did a bill of sale. Never had anything come back and bite me.

Cut off the headstock and post to DVLA with the scrapping notice. If they claim it isn't acceptable ask them in these exact words 'Are you taking the piss?' Do not deviate from those words, I look forward to the answer, especially as they are now legally in possession of the bike.

^^^
My thinking.

Alternatively, deliver it (with proof of delivery) to The Right Honourable Patrick McLoughlin MP, Secretary of State for Transport, along with a letter explaining that he is now the keeper of the vehicle.

Why? For the lulz. Why not? It's their system, let them figure it out.

Since it is classified as a vehicle, does it not need to go to a dismantler, and then you can get the destruction certificate to send to the DVLA to declared scrapped?

Also, Scrapyards aren't allowed to pay cash for metal any more either.

Pretty much all metal scrap yards will be listed as that as far as I know.

And yes, they won't pay cash, but most will do an instant transfer to your bank account - if the frame is steel it really will be pennies anyway. 80p/kg for alloy at the local one here, so not a massive amount for an alloy frame either.
You will most probably need to take photo ID with you too.

I'd rather give it away than give a scrappy my bank details Laughing

They'll also do you a cheque if you prefer usually.

I'd be tempted by a 99p ebay listing collection only.
(Or do postage and make a couple of quid on that too.)

This is what I do if I need to get rid of something and I cba doing it myself.

If I make nothing on it, at least somebody else is coming to take it away.

I sold an item for 99p auction collection only.

it went for 99p too and the guy asked me to post.

After a month of arguing about collection and postage, he put a claim in and gave me negative feedback for not posting item, when the item was listed as Collection Only Laughing

This is how I get rid of all large stuff I cant be arsed to take the the dump.

Sold an entire Audi A6 Heated leather interior for 99p last year. Was picked up by a right honorable fellow with a few washing machines in the back of his transit. Laughing

If negative feedback like that is unfair, you can have it removed.

They wouldn't I had to put a comment/response on it, all ebay did when I complained about it was give me 99p back, and said that they would cover the 99p refund out of goodwill Laughing

A very good question. I can't find a single scrap of legislation requiring you to get a destruction certificate, if someone could point me in the right direction it would be a great help?

I can't find one.

What are you thinking? "I am in receipt of your blackmail demand and will be delighted to thrash your semi-qualified ill-prepared representatives up and down every court in the land if you are foolish enough to prosecute me for keeping an object that no longer exists, let alone in the form of a motor/mechanically propelled vehicle."
