Apparently the size of tyre on the front of my 03 zx6r is an odd size, it's wearing a 120/65/17

I've had a look on a couple tyre sites and no one sells the Michelen pilot road 3. Which are the tyres I've been recommended by the zx6r forum.

Anyone else ever come across this before??

I'm not 100% sure but is the stock size not a 120/60/17?

i can understand why 65 has been put on as the higher profile will make it turn in quicker.

No, apparently it's 120/65.

I've read a couple of the old release articles and they all state that size.

What's the best option then. Go down a profile or up??

Like already said somewhere else... 120/65 was standard.. but you won't get new good tyres in that size anymore.. Everybody I know with J1/J2/A1P use 120/70 instead (all good tyres you can get in this size).

I use it too.

Why did you not ask what size they use then?

Anyway 3's are old hat now as Pilot road 4's are out.

70 profile should be ok as long as there is clearance to the mudguard. The 70 profile is approx 6mm taller than the 65 profile (profile index is the height of the sidewall expressed as a percentage of the width of the tyre. Eg. width is 120mm, therefore standard profile height is 65% of 120mm = 78mm whereas the 70 profile is 70% of 120mm = 84mm)

No it won't.

Going from a 120/60 to a 120/65 would raise the front end by 4mm, thereby increasing the rake angle and making the bike more stable with a tendancy to turn in slower.

To answer the question, yes I have heard of 65 section tyres before. Yes they are an oddball size. I happen to think they would suit my bike very well because my standard 70 is a bit too stable and 60 is a wee bit too twitchy. Boils down to one manufacturer trying to make their bikes special and unique. There are fads all the time be it wheel size or tyre profile. Think yourself lucky you don't have 17.5" wheels...

If you want to play it safe, you could fit a 70 section then drop to yokes another 5mm down the fork leg to maintain your steering geometry.

Of you could fit a 60 section and raise the front by 4mm but be aware there is a slight risk you might run off the edge of the front tyre before the back one, you'd certainly get closer to the edge of the tyre more quickly.

Even if you didn't change the front ride height, fitting either a 60 or a 70 isn't going to kill you. It'll feel a bit more stable with a 70 and tend to use the middle of the tyre more. It'll feel a bit more twitchy on a 60 and tend to use the sides of the tyre more.

I'm going to go ahead and assume you've never actually set the sag on your bike anyway (neither have I) so you have no idea if it was sitting with the correct ride-height and rake angle to begin with.

Haven't had the bike long and it's still exactly as I bought it.

Haven't had the time I would have liked to have it set up to my preference, I do know that the tyres as not filling me with confidence though, hence the reason for changing them.

There are a few 120/65/17 out there mostly in sporty types my Wholesaler has 5 different ones in Stock

But 120/70ZR17 would be cheaper and easer to source and just fine

not sure if it will help, but i changed the shoes on my 03' B1H about 6 months ago, put a 120/70 diablo Supercorsa on the front and dropped the yokes 10mm, Admittedly i'm not as quick as that Valentino Rossi bloke from Status Quo, but feels ok to me, turns in nicely and seems stable enough at higher speeds Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
