Seeing that you don't seem to get anything particularly tangible for your money, why not just ride/drive there without paying them a big wad of cash and an even bigger 'deposit'?
These are people that consider a £50 admin fee 'a small extra cost'!

The Mongol rally seems like more of a concept than an actual event. You get no support, just maybe some stickers and a 'finish' line. Sorry, I don't need to pay 500 quid for that.

I'm with G on this one, if you want to drive to Mongolia, do it anyway, whenever you want. Having the banner of 'The Mongol Rally' will make absolutely no difference to the journey.

Same here. Just go yourself at a similar time.

It's not like there's a bivouac at the end of each night, or check points or anyting.

If you want to do a proper Rally Raid you could start with the Greek one which is 5 days or so, or even the Budapest-Bamako.
