Hello,

Just a quick question, may seem daft but here goes.

If an engine from a bike which had been written off and was a cat b. if you was to put the engine out of the cat b frame and into a cat c frame and match it up with the dvla, would it therefore be classed a cat c on papers?

Confusing a little, but sure someone can answer this.

Thanks.

The category would be C, since vehicles are registered according to their vin which is stamped on the frame.

You can swap the engine with no real issues, although if the cat B wasn't "that" bad I'd chuck it on the road.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was sold a frame by someone and they didn't tell me it was a cat c and yes I should of checked!

So an engine cannot contain a category of any sort?

I'm not the sort to trick someone, so should I tell them it was in a bike which was written off? Or not needed as there is no damage and runs fine.

Thanks.

A write off category purely applies to the frame number.
Ok, the DVLA do record engine numbers, but they don't record anything against them - it's the same as putting a seat from a written off bike on your unrecorded bike.

A significant amount of engines for sale will be from written off bikes
