If my bike has 109.7 bhp standard, its dry weight is 174 kg, I've calculated the power to weight ratio as being 0.63 (109.7/174). Is this correct? From this information, how do I calculate the bhp per tonne?

Yep thats right, 0.63bhp/kg. as there are 1000kg in a tonne you have 0.63*1000=630bhp/tonne.

I tmay sound impressive... but unfortunately when you look at the actual horse power and the wet weight, never mind the rider, it aint quite so good.

Still, something to tell the boyracers Wink.

'Dry' weight is a real con. Its without any fluids, so that can mean just petrol, coolant and engine oil, or it may include battery fluid and fork oil too.

Yep. Suspect a Hornet actually makes under 90 at the rear wheel. The weight will be even more out. You probably need to add at least 30kg to the weight of the bike to take account of fuel, oil, battery acid, fork oil, coolant, etc, then there is a 60+kg rider, wearing 10~20kg of bike gear.

Whose power and weight figures are also fairly screwey. My car has a claimed 137hp, but a friend had one the same and had that rolling roaded and it made just under 90hp at the wheels, the rest disappearing with transmission losses (quite high for a 4wd car), powering the power steering, alternator, etc (not sure which of those are meant to be included in the standard used for the original power claims).

All the best

Keith
