During the winter months Wurth dry lube is 1) not doing a great job and 2) expensive for me. So I'm going to try and go down the engine oil route.

My question is, does it matter what type I use. Can it be any old cheap crud or does it need to be good quality Castrol type ****? And semi or full synthetic, does it even matter? I have an endless X-ring chain.

Also, instead of using Wurths chain and brake cleaner, can I use paraffin on my brakes discs as well as my chain?

I'm still relatively new to biking and have only ever used expensive cleaners and lubes and I'm rapidly finding out it aint cheap when you go for the 'good' stuff.

Cheers.

Who says wurth is no good for winter?
I used it without much hassle.

As to cleaning discs brake cleaner is best as it dries without any residue.
Paraffin is no good for brakes as it leave an oily film and will contaminate pads.

Brake clear is cheap anyway.

What engine oil to use... the engine oil that you've drained out of your engine when changing the oil.

No it doesn't matter at all. However 10w40 and such like is going to fling like a bastard. Thicker oil like that used in transmissions e.g. EP90 is less likely to get whizzed off. Especially if you bung some on after riding, then wipe off the excess just prior to your next ride. Also, to say that cleaning the chain with diesel / paraffin once or twice a week helps is an understatement. Finally, that Wurth stuff sucks more or less total ass imo.

Invest 20 quid on a loobman or a tutoro and use whatever oil you find.
