Blew it up tonight at Red Lodge. Laughing

Fast as fuck on the straight. Not so great in the corners.
Road legal tyres didn't help. Slicks would have been nice.

Impressive power while it lasted.

Hi Binge, I'm sorry she's blown up, but it must have been a wicked ride before it did! It looks and sounds very crisp and rapid in the vid too! Thumbs Up

Hopefully you can flush out the bottom end, and throw a new piston and rings in if the bore is ok? And then she'll be screaming again.

I think I'd want a spin on the dyno with a box of jets though before the next proper thrash, as without theres no accurate way of knowing if the jetting is right IMO.

Fooking massive potential in that pocket rocket that's for sure!

Hi

Did you put the jetting up again from the small main jet you tried when looking for the running problem?

All the best

Aha yes, I upped it back to a 165 Main jet.
I think maybe I should have done a few laps then came in for a plug chop.
But it was just too damn enjoyable. Laughing

I've got a bit of time off soon, so going to pull the top end off and have a look, see what's happened.
I've got a feeling the barrel is going to be shagged.
It had a few light marks in the bore 3 years ago when I built the engine, but I shrugged it off, and hoped for the best.

Gotta weigh up if it's worth having mine re-plated, and getting a matching piston, Or just buying a complete kit from Mitaka.

Just uploading a video of the final breaths of the Rotax before it was pushed back to the pits.

Did it nip up about the 2 minute mark? Captain hindsight might have stopped then.

Laughing

Track was icy cold so grip was terrible.
Difficult to tell what was kick down wheel lock, and what was engine failure. Haha

Hi

Plug chop would probably have been a good idea. I presume you were running super unleaded.

All the best

I finally got round to stripping the engine down the other day.

Results:
Looks like it's turned both rings, and the pegs have trashed the piston and bore.

I've been offered a brand new, Aprilia barrel for £80.00 posted.
But it's for a 122.
I've read you can slot the front holes to make it fit, but I'm still not sure about doing this.

it'll then be a new piston, bearing and gasket kit, before taking it straight to a tuning centre with a rolling road via trailer. Laughing

Hi

You can slot the front barrel mounts, but also something I am not keen on either.

The damage to the bore looks minimal from the pics (but can rarely tell that well from pics), but a bit concerned why the ring pegs have come out. Never heard of this as a common thing on the Rotax engines. Were the circlips OK?

All the best

Katy

Circlips are both in and complete. They are C Clips rather than G Clips. So nothing has come away.

I don't really know. Unless it was running too hot and caused the piston to fall apart?
It was only a Mitaka piston. Whether than makes a difference or not I dont know.

The barrel isnt too sinister, but you can feel the scores in it. Is that enough to warranty a replate or replacement?

Hi

Personally, being a tight git, if the scores are barely possible to feel then I would stick in a new piston. I know some of the suppliers of Mitaka pistons sell them with different (and claimed better) rings.

All the best

My Mitaka kit had Riken rings. Rather than the horrific stock ones with the Mitaka.

Hmm, They're, a little deeper than barely possible to feel.
They're not sharp scores though. But I do think they've gone through the plating.

Could it be honed? As It's extremely shiney (like chrome), I assume that makes it a worn barrel anyway? As I see most decent / new nikasil bores are a little dull.

Hi

If it has gone through the plating then no chance. But takes a fair bit to go through that. Once through the plating things wear VERY quickly.

All the best

I've had another look, it doesn't look as bad as I first thought. However, I do think it's quite 'worn' as the plating is really shiney.

I'm gonna risk it...

I've bought a single ring piston at 53.98mm (Standard is 53.97)
I'm going to run the honing tool through my cylinder a few times to dull it back off, and possibly smooth the marks out a bit.
Will polish up the head, and stick it back together. See what happens.

I've bought a couple of idle jet emulsion tubes (gone for a 40 and 42) to stop it running lean on over-run and low throttle.

Will crank the oil pump up a fair bit, and run some better oil, I'd stuck some cheap shit in last time to get me home, as the 2t tank was running low.
I dont think that helped.

Once bits arrive, I'll stick it back together and see what happens.

How important is this 'squish' lark?
Everyone on the RS page seem to wank themselves off over 'squish'.

On its own irrelevant, but combined with the compression ratio important. Just narrow the squish down without taking account of compression and compression can go through the roof, which will melt pistons. But a narrow squish band should mean you can run a higher compression without melting the piston.

Standard it is probably a bit wide

All the best

Katy

Took a closer look at the Rotax today.
Seems like the rod has got a bit hot. Embarassed

Bearing seems tight on the crank, Not sure what to do now.
Piston and honing tool have arrived, might just whack it together, run it rich, and hope for the best. Laughing

Conrod has arrived

Gotta strip the crank out of the engine, and then find somebody with the skill and knowledge to rebuild it for me. Laughing
