Hello everyone,

Bit of a problem with the headlight on the girlfriend's bike. Full beam works fine, dipped beam will not. The bulb is ok, as are the fuses. There are three connections going into the back of the bulb housing. This problem happened before but I took it apart, cleaned the connections and it was fine. This time the same strategy hasn't worked.

Any ideas?

This sounds suspiciously like a break in the wiring, you need to do a continuity test

What raesewell said, but incase it is the bulb just check to see if you get voltage across both positive connections to ground - if not then check the wiring and connector, bit of switch cleaner can work a charm.

One of the most useful tools I have in my toolbox is a 12V bulb with about 6 inches of wire connected.

All you need to do is take the connector off the back of the headlamp bulb, poke the bared ends of your test bulb wires into the appropriate slots in the headlamp connector and switch the lights on.

If the bulb lights, you're getting volts there, so while it's lit, give the loom a bit of a wiggle to see if the bulb goes off at any point.

If not, problem is most likely the bulb (or bulb holder having corrosion preventing a good earth connection).

If the test bulb does flash off, then there is a problem with the wiring.

The test bulb I use is (was) actually the oil pressure warning lamp from the dashboard of an old mini 850 (with the central instrument binnacle) which has a useful bulb holder to make bulb changes easy and comes with wires attached.
