Hi new here so hope I'm posting in the right section anyway to the point. I've been asked to choose between a aprillia area 51 or something like a dt50mx or rd50. I'm thinking the dt50mx or rd50 for fine Japanese engineering however the area 51 does have a lot to offer just for the speed and weight. Since I will be going to college in this in all weathers I need reliability and enough speed not to drop too far behind so 45-50 mph will be fine but will a rd or DT achieve that and still be a reliable bike? Thoughts and opinions on this will be appreciated.

I personally think a 50cc is a waste of money, never had one or wanted one. Most 50cc bikes will do 25-30mph unless you derestrict them. Maybe a derestricted bike will achieve those speeds but you will definitely red lining it all the time. Also most cops are aware that 50cc bikes are not supposed to be doing 45mph.

If I was you I would save up and get a 125 when your 17.
That being said if you absolute need one get a cheap and reliable one (Can always pick up a cheap Vespa) and plod about on it until you can upgrade.

your actual question is do i want to risk my bike and licence or not, plus the following few years of hiked insurance IF you get caught

Yes, some forces do run Operation Pedboi Sweep, but it seems to be the urban and southron ones. Lincolnshire are still lighting gas lamps at night, right?

I believe that a 16 year old is more likely to be potatoed than caught riding Otherwise Than In Accordance, so my consideration would be to get a really good example of any ped, rather than chase after a specific brand or model and pass up opportunities.

Are you a long way off 17/desperately in need of transport now.

I'd really hold off and use a bus/cycle until you can get a 125 at 17 personally. Save yourself much road-bullying grief/potential problems.
