...and it wont be anonymised*, you need to opt-out if you don't want it to happen and you need to do it quickly, before it's too late.

This site gives a rather basic info but makes it a little clearer if you don't fancy wading through government documents. It also provides links to opt-out forms ( or just get it here https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/14156524/caredata_trifold.pdf

You cannot object to your NHS information being shared in an anonymised way. That's why there are two opt-outs from care.data - because your data will not be anonymised or de-identified before it is extracted and uploaded from your GP records, will not be anonymised once uploaded and combined, and can and will be released in an indentifiable (non-anonymised) form to organisations

I assume the intention here is to scare monger people into thinking their personal data will be sold to the lowest bidder who will do what they want with it - highly customised junk mail for your particular medical condition and the like.

This is highly unlikely. I deal with this sort of thing in my day job, if the information is used for a purpose other than the one it was collected for, the use is breaching the data protection act. To use the data for different reason requires consent. If the consent is being obtained through an opt-out system rather than an opt-in system, the new use for the data is going to be close to the original use. No-one wants to invoke the wrath of the information commissioner.

So maybe your data will be given or sold to research companies or universities. This happens quite a lot as well, but it will be annonymised. The data may be extracted and held by the NHS as plain data, but very few companies or research institutions will accept it in this format - if there is a breach and someone's details get out, they have to do a lot of work to fix the problem. They prefer to be given an anonymised data set and they still treat it as if it was personal data.

Phamaceutical companies have very little in the way of scruples, and the DPA would be difficult to enforce for a foreign company. Supposing a far-eastern company got hold of the personal details of millions of potential customers for a particular ailment. They would have a tailor-made customer base to spam with targeted mail with a fantastic conversion rate.

Indeed, the ICO might send them a strongly worded memo. Tut Tut

The ICO is toothless in as much as while transgressors will be fined for breaching the Data Protection Act, the victim of the breach has no remedy. Once your data is compromised it's too late, it cannot be un-compromised. The known cannot be unknown.

We all need to be suspicious and protective of our information.

Strangely enough I had a letter addressed to me by name this morning from a private company offering me a 'life scan'. One week after being in hospital.

This website provides facts, not opinion.

In Release 1 of care.data, this information will only be released to those requesting it in an aggregated, anonymised or pseudonymised form, but a bit later on, from Release 2 of care.data onwards, it is likely to be identifiable as your information, and you will not be asked for your permission before your data is distributed.
Sounds a little opinonated Thinking
Quote:
Section 251 can and will inevitably be used to disseminate identifiable information from care.data to other organisations - so bypassing any requirement to seek your consent.

Section 251 approval is granted after organisations have successfully applied to theConfidentiality Advisory Group (CAG). The Secretary of State for Health takes the advice of the CAG under consideration when determining whether to apply Section 251. But it is by no means certain that CAG approval will always be required for Section 251 releases in the future.
Its by no means certain the data protection act wont be destroyed tomorrow and everyones information scattered everywhere Eh?

As with any large scale data project it has potential to go wrong in some respects, but it also holds huge potential to give much needed better access and provisions for health services.

But of course focus will probably be stirred around big brother harvesting and auctioning our lives.
