Hello folks,

Just found a copy of the above in the road and had a quick look.

Rider Power, apart from all the obvious mistakes of one sort or another, anyone seen it? If so, what do you think? In a very patronising manner they seem surprised that a Triumph could come out on top, and above their usual 'best' brand...

Mike.

I find I get more useful information on motorbikes from the back of a bottle of orange squash than I ever could from DiRe magazine.

Should have left it there.

I used to pick it up occasionally until I rage-quit over an article "clarifying" the new A2 license class that contained several whoppers. If I want to read uninformed bollocks presented as authoritative fact, I can just un-enemy Teffers.

I think that DiRe magazine is a well informed, well written & informative magazine.

I also think that rickets is a life enhancing disease. Razz

I get Ride but to be honest I'd read anything rather than just stare at a strangers face on the train into London everyday.

However, I do think their routes section of the website is good, for UK and novice euro tourers!

Same. I get Ride (on the ipad, not the paper version) because I like the routes. I'm also starting to pay attention to the long-term reviews, thinking ahead to the next bike. I also read Bike.

I was a journalist for 20 years (switched to writing software for journalists about five years ago). I know how easy it is to make mistakes and how hard it is to be objective, etc. These magazines are just written by blokes who like riding, who maybe have a little more experience than I do, but that's all. I'm not expecting much more than I would on this forum. It's entertaining and better than watching TV.

If you were a journalist then you know that most of the stuff in magazines is made up, and tried and tested products aren't often tried or tested. That articles are added just to fill pages (since they have to print an even amount of pages), and that advertisers get often also get editorial coverage.

We're veering way off topic, but just about every part of that is false, whether you will believe it or not.

That said, I covered courts and crime for newspapers and wire services, mostly, so I can't put hand on heart and say that magazines *don't* make up stuff, but I find it unlikely. I did for a while work at PC Week in the U.S., where I did reviews of software and hardware. I was constantly accused of bias, being on the take, making stuff up... It eventually drove me out of that business and back into normal news, even though I found covering gadgets and software a lot of fun. I couldn't say anything even vaguely negative about Apple or, say, OS/2 (there's a blast from the past!) without getting death threats. Literally.

MCN reviews, just off the top of my head:

[The KLR250] does have an electric start (it does not)

[The GPS500S's] large mirrors work very well. (they are notoriously poor unless you like looking at your elbows, with many aftermarket solutions)

One day we'll look back on "professional" journalism as a quaint relic, like hand-scribed manuscripts.

OK, I concede the point -- those are pretty bad errors.

I have zero personal experience in magazines and very little outside of fish and chip wrap hackery. Maybe motorcycle journalism is particularly poor. Still, I'd rather read Ride or Bike than watch most telly, even if I have to take everything with a large pitcher of salt.

In a recent copy of Ride I read the following in the Q&A section

Q. 'I'm finding less time to play with my motocross bike, a Honda CRF450R, but fancy turning it into a supermoto for the road over the Winter. What are the best modifications and what do I have to do to make this legal?' Chris

A. 'This turned out to be really complex when we looked into it. And it's just been made harder with the closure of local DVLA offices where you could actually talk to someone.
Depending on how old your bike is you'll need a certificate of conformity from the original dealer, though most motocross bikes don't have one. So you'll have to take your bike to a VOSA regional office for a European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval test. This is a super strict MoT test that checks for lights, sharp edges, speedometer, emissions and even a lockable fuel filler. You also need road legal tyres that could be difficult for modern off-road wheel sizes.
You then need to apply for a registration after you've got insurance, based on your chassis number and MoT certificate if your CRF is over three years old. The procedure seems to differ every time depending on who you talk to , and most dealers we spoke to said 'avoid'.
Your best bet is to sell your CRF and buy the very fine road-legal enduro version.

Mmmm.Just what the CRF owner wanted to hear.

Spot the mistakes.
