Should i be concerned?

Stupidly didn't check this, only vin, but V5 arrived today and the engine number is different.

On the bike there is 2 lines of numbers on the engine and looks like this.. *E399E-* then 2nd line looks like this (i put questions marks where the actual numbers are: *??????* On the V5 it looks like this. I put question marks for some of the numbers.. E399E0??????

So the first few characters match but basically not the 2nd line of the engine. The owner didn't mention anything, I know I should have checked and asked but is this heard of to have a partial mis match before I go back and ask the previous owner?

Should I inform the DVLA of the change if the previous owner does/doesnt know about it? Is there anyway I can investigate further? Just a bit worried now that i don't know the history of this engine and whether i would struggle selling it

Just send the V5 back to the DVLA with the updated engine number. Should be simple has. I did this a few times when I had to change the engine on previous bikes. Therefore, this shouldn't be an issue to notify them of the change.

Could well be a genuine reason like an engine change. If it's the frame that doesn't match the V5, then I'd be more concerned.

I'd not inform the cunning cunts in Wales.

If the engine is from a robbed bike, you'll lose it.

I have a couple of bikes with different engine numbers. Because I changed the engine.

I told no-one, no-one has ever checked.

You are supposed to inform the DVLA...

I probably only checked one in ten bikes I ever owned. If the frame number is correct I'd forget about it. Worrying about the mileage is daft because a well maintained and fairly ridden 50k miles engine is going to be better than one ragged to hell for 20.

DVLA will only make your life hard because that's what they like to do.

All I'd be concerned about is changing the oil regularly, I wouldn't have even asked the previous owner. My engine number doesn't match because its from a ZX9R. I'm not speaking to the DVLA on that one Laughing

Not the bike, the engine. Have heard of stolen bikes being broken for spares so i dont know the origin. If i bought a car id want to know if its had an engine transplant. If its nothing to be worried about according to people on here then ill leave it at that, which is just the question i asked really.

Good man Thumbs Up

Think of it like this - the donor vehicle might well have been treated better than the one it went into. You have no way of knowing about either so there's no point considering it.

Hi

Replaced a blown up engine in a GPZ500 with a 2nd hand one from a breakers. The 2nd hand engine was almost new - the breakers said it was but I took that with a pinch of salt. But the only grease around the front sprocket was a small amount of white grease from a new chain, and the engine was noticeably still tight.

All the best

Keith

Off topic... this dick has been neg karma me for ages. Laughing

On topic, I'd be concerned if it was something off road based, there was a KTM in bits up for sale at the back end of last year that turned out to be someones bike Laughing They are chav magnets, the YBR could have had a replacement because the original owner didn't know what oil was.

Depends, I put a 45,000 mile engine in my 20,000 mile GS500 that had a broken front engine mount because it was the cheapest possible fix at the time Laughing

Sometimes it's not just the bits that whirr round in the middle that make for a serviceable lump!!!!
