There are so many good roads in Wales, it's hard to know how you could go wrong. In the north, you have the A5. From Capel Curig (café) up towards Bangor, turn left onto the A4244, then left again onto the A4086 to go through the Llanberis Pass, to Pen y Pass (café and view of Snowdon). Then you could complete the loop by following the 4086 back to Capel Curig, or turn right out of Pen y Pass and take the A498 to Beddgelert via Nant Gwynant. All good roads with excellent scenery and views.

For me, the best roads are in mid Wales though. B4358 Beulah to Newbridge on Wye. A44 to Rhayader and on to Aberystwyth. Then back via A4120 to Devils Bridge.

Llandovery (West End café) A483 to Builth Wells, to Llandrindod Wells, to Newtown (Crossgates café at junction with A44).

All cracking roads, great fun, and not too much distance to cover in any one day - I use these roads in the summer, riding out there from Oxfordshire, good day's riding whilst there, and home again for dinner. Er, tea.

But don't forget to explore the smaller mountain roads too, like the one round by Llyn Brianne not far from Llandovery, and the Elan Valley, with the mountain road to Aberystwyth, for a different kind of riding. Look out for sheep though!

When I was doing 530 mile one day trip from Northampton to Holyhead and back I liked this section of my journey the most...

MAP

I have a short 4 minute video of 80% of that section on youtube, you can see how the roads look like.

I also did this one on different occasion and I thought it was quite good...

Pick up a copy of this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bikers-Britain-Great-Motorbike-Rides/dp/0749573961/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390818783&sr=8-1&keywords=best+biking+roads

It puts together a tour of Wales, plus lots of other good roads across the UK

I find these places that have 'bikers' in the title of their hotel/b&b because 'we love bikers' always have inflated prices with comparable alternatives.

I've stayed in a place on the A470, it is a hostel but has many single and double rooms and a single can be got for around £15 - £20. It's basic but clean, warm and comfortable.
Turn up with food and cook it in their massive kitchen.

One thing that people moan about is having to put your own duvet cover on. oh noes.

This place on the A470 at Dolwyddelan, LL25 0DQ

I'm sure it's very good but I'm just not a hostel kind of a person.
I've stayed at bikers retreat and Nigel and Tiv are great company and I hve been back a couple of times. It was just a suggestion, if it's too expensive then by all means decline

Me neither, that's why I book a room there and not in a dorm.

Used this campsite a few times. About £6 per night with electric if you want it.
Llandovery is a good base for ride outs.

Whitehouse camp site in builthwells is bike friendly.good showers etc and they do a great breakfast in the pub cross the road..
https://www.whitehousecampsite.co.uk/

The route I showed will indeed give you a good base to work from.plenty of other great roads peal of from it.eg Rhayader to Aberystwyth via the mountain road which will take you through devils bridge with more bike freindly cafés. Thumbs Up

I use the campsite at Llandovery quite a bit. You've got a large grocery store just over the road, shops, petrol station. Plus, the best bit, the West End Café, so you just nip into town (5 min walk) for a good ol greasy Joe in the mornings. Biker friendly, not too pricey. Good for evening meals too.

Llandovery is an easy ride down to the Brecon Beacons, Superbites burger wagon by Pen y Fan, good place to stop for cuppa and a natter with other riders. And you're well placed for central Wales where the best roads are too. You can do a run up to Snowdonia from here too, but it is an all day ride there and back if you want to stop for anything whilst up there.
