Hi all

I'm after some advice on improving the overall quality of my bike before I sell it. I initially paid 1,700 for it, about 3 years ago. With that in mind, I'm trying not to spend too much, so that I would be at a significant loss. I'm considering selling it for about 1,200.

The main issue I can see, with an inexperienced eye, is corrosion. So any advice on getting rid of it and general tarting up would be appreciated....

The fix for that can be quick, cheap, easy.

Pick one out of three.

You'll need to sand back the bad patches and respray to treat that corrosion. I wouldn't bother.

Probably the most unhelpful reply you could post, other than nobcat.

It's a lot of work to sort that out and you won't recoup the costs of doing it (let alone the labour) in increased resale value. Just sell it as it is.

How scrupulous are you? Exhaust wrap and black high temp paint can hide those sins long enough for a sale but the buyer won't be too chuffed when the paint peels/flakes away and when he looks under the wrap. Also clued up buyers will see the wrap and paint for what it is.

Other than that like everyone else said doing it properly isn't worth the time and cost. Just sell as is.

I wouldn't invest more than an hour on that bike. Wire wool to take the worst of the orange off of the corrosion, give it a wash down, advertise it with "usual age related cosmetic blemishes but... [is bests bike evers]".

Painting the exhaust in a way that will survive a test ride means taking it off and wire brush / sanding / wooling / degreasing it back to bright metal. Given the time involved and chances of snapping a stud, I wouldn't bother.

Engine, don't touch it, it'll just look worse.

It's a practical commuter bike, it won't have to look mint to sell.

Thanks for the replies all. They've been really useful. I think I'll give the areas a rub down and sell it.
Great help!
