Didnt take before pics, but they were stripped due to sticky pistons. 1 locked. They were generally cruddy so were striped, cleaned, poished, cleaned again then re assembled.

Lots of pics below:

Yes, looks like its on the edge of friction material!

These are not my blue spot calipers but a customers

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Workshop/Picture383.jpg

But after a good clean they all looked good

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Workshop/Picture384.jpg

As to how much copper grease to use,it would be best to clean off the excess as that will soon get onto the friction surfaces and compromise the stopping ability Confused

Yeah in hindsight I did go a bit mad with the grease.

I had been watching this video the night before i went to pick up my parts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUyGTvLDrt4

and thought I'd give it a go with the aerosol.

I think ill be removing the pads, springs and pins and cleaning them again, then applying a sensible amount of slip to the back of the pads.

Fizzer thou, did you re use the seals? £134.10 yamaha charged me for new ones, i was gutted!

souleh, I used around 4 500ml tins of carb cleaner, i prefer that as it seems to cut through the grime better than normal brake cleaner. Lots of compressed air, many tooth brushes and lots of autosol were used too.

How did you get the jammed piston out? I have to do mine shortly as I have one jammed in!

Won't be paying £135 for the bits either!! Shocked

Blue spots james?

Really the only logical way for me was to use compressed air since I have it. block the gap on between the small pistons and pop out the larger ones first, then you can aim the air down the connecting hole between the pistons to get the smaller ones out.

HTH.

Yeh Blue Spots.

Looks like a good reason to justify buying a compressor to the wife! Thumbs Up

so you can get the pistons out without winding out the blue plugs on them?
If so I have learn something today, as I thought that you needed a special socket to remove the pistons on these brakes.

According to www.exup1000.co.uk you can remove the blue/gold/silver anodised plugs but the seals are not available from looking at the R1 parts fiche.

But looking at the XJR1200 parts fiche (I think it is that bike Question ) then the seals are available.

OP.If you still have the old rear seals, may I have them please??

And yes I did reuse the old seals in the caliper rebuild shown above. The bike had only done 30k miles and were perfectly reuseable.

I did mine recently on the thundercat as they were a bloody mess. Binding really bad, I had an awful turning circle.

To get the jammed piston out I clamped the opposite piston with a monkey pliers wrench thingy and jammed a piece of wood between the other two. Then put a bicycle pump with a conical fitment into the banjo hole (I have a good bike pump, I cycle a lot). Pump a few times and it pops the non clamped piston out. I couldn't be bothered making compressor noise at 2 in the morning.

Then you clean them one by one by using cotton, brake cleaner, dental pick, toothbrushes. etc etc. choose your weapon.

Once clean put the new seals in and repeat the procedure. It took me half an hour to clean each piston. Nightmare I tell you.

I honestly have to say I was surprised to see how clean OP's table is. Mine was a mess with brake fluid everywhere. Fork seals and caliper rebuilds are something i do not like doing because of the mess.

Fizzer have you got a link to this about the plug seals?

Captain obvious alert but you do know the rear blue spot I've got is the XJR1300/FZS1000 one not the R1 one, don't know if the seals differ but just thought I'd point that out. If u still want them send me a pm.

Pads pins and clips removed de greased then re assembled with a sensible amount of slip on the back of the pads. Aerosol copper grease to the back of the cupboard.
