Has anyone bought a machine to get scratches out of their CD's?
Are they any good?

Rub toothpaste on the scratch then rinse off with water. Repeat till scratch fades.

Yeah, I read about the toothpaste and I'm sure TCut would do the same thing but I'm a lazy bastard.

Depends what side of the disc the scratches are on and how deep they are if they're on the plastic underside. If they're on the top on the foil side the disc is fucked as the foil is what stores the information.

pretty much this
be careful with Tcut it could make the disk worse toothpaste does work in some cases depends on the scratch

had one of the machines years ago
good for cleaning, you can also use the toothpaste with the machine as well

Rip the CD and then burn it to another disc. I've found ripping works on CDs that skip on other players.

I used to use Brasso on all my xbox games when they got scratched. Worked pretty well.

Nice ideas. I take great care with my own discs and never needed to remove scratches but I've just been handed a substantial pile along with the question 'Dad, can you do anything with these?'

Tempted to bin the lot! Laughing

Try this first. If this fails the try all the scratch removal and repair tricks.

Alternatively snap the disc in a rage as you realise all your data is gone Thumbs Up

What type of CDs?
On the ripping, I used to use a program called 'Exact Audio Copy' (EAC) which would go over the same bit loads of times and be much more likely to get it.
These days however, you might be better downloading it unless it's personal data.

I'd add to rip using the highest bit rate available. If you rip to MP3 you'll get horrible compression so the copied CD will never be as good as the first. Use a CD copier like Roxio (or whatever the cool kids are using these days) and you should get as close to a bit for bit reproduction.

These young'ns don't know they're born. They can never know the utter joy of removing a tape from a car stereo only to have half a yard of unravelled tape come trailing out afterwards still somehow attached inside the machine.

I said CDs would be a passing fad and now my words have come true only about 30 years later.

i think places like CEX can clean discs for you. i took a scratched game back to them once and they cleaned it up nice. they may do it for non-CEX purchased CDs/Games if you ask nicely.

toothpaste does work, but as above depends on scratch depth/side of disc scratch is on.

I bought this.

It has worked on the majority of discs I have used it on. Thumbs Up
