Hi all.

I'll be doing my A2 license this summer (47bhp), and would ideally like a touring bike that isn't completely boring to ride.

If anyone has any recommendations that would be excellent, if not, I'll probably settle for a sports tourer.

If it's your first big bike, i doubt you'll find any bigger bike boring. I went from a 125 to a 'Blandit' (Bandit 600), which is probably a boring bike for an experienced rider or someone who's ridden other bikes but, not for a new rider who hasn't experience any other bigger bike yet.

Here's a list of adventure/tourer bikes you can ride on an A2 license:

BMW G650GS
BMW R1100GS
Yamaha XT660Z Tenere
Yamaha TDM 850/900
Honda NC700X
Honda CB500X
Aprilia Pegaso 660
Husqvarana TR 650 Terra
Kawasaki KRL650
Kawasaki Versys 650

(Most of the bikes above would need restricting)

You may want to read reviews and cancel out any bikes that are out of budget and then go on to test ride those bikes (if you can) and see which bike you take a fancy to.

Edit: You can also ride a BMW R850GS on an A2 license

Hmm, very true.

I do like the look of the Tenere's, and as quite a tall person they'd probably feel a bit comfier riding them.

Always liked the BMW GS'.

There's a good selection there, will be enough to keep me busy researching for a while I should imagine.

I've got to sing the praises of the aprilia pegaso 650 strada. Awesome bike. Shame they don't / didn't make it with abs

I imagine with the bigger screen, top box and panniers the Honda CBR500R would be a decent one if you intend to stick to roads, obviously wouldn't be great on dirt roads etc. Same engine as the CB500X, I think Honda are being stupid calling it a supersports.

Yamaha call the R125 a supersports. In comparison to that, a CBR500R is rather super

I guess it depends on the length of your inside leg, but mine is 35" and I found all GS too short for me...foot to peg ratio is too cramped for lanky legs. I ride Kwak Versys 650 - which is perfect for me. I still have plenty of bend in the knee and flat footed, but pegs are lower than any bike I've ridden in the past...so perfect for me, post-injury. Thumbs Up

I am on an A2 restricted licence and I ride an BMW R1150 GS.
I went straight from a 125 to an 1150cc and I don't find it boring.
It will do just over 100mph restricted it is fitted with a throttle restriction and it gets to 100mph really fast it has a lot of torque.

Personally I really like it.

I considered on the Pegaso before getting my Dakar, but the bike has a very bad reputation. Most people do seem to love it though until they have an issue.

In response to the OP. I remember when I sold my RD125 to do my Direct Access. On the test the CB500s felt like lightening. When i passed i bought a GPZ500 it was a rocket ship compared to the CB500.

The moral of the story is, upgrading from a 125, anything is going to feel pretty quick.

I am currently looking at a CBF500, always liked them and they are bulletproof from what I have heard.

Does it have to be a tourer? What about a sports tourer?

Personally, I'd go for a bike that was designed for the A2 class. I wouldn't like to ride an underpowered bike, for the simple reason that it wasn't designed for it.

It's like flying a Boeing with one engine.

So in my case, options would be the CB500X, even the CBR500R, which is hardly a sports bike. Can just put some soft luggage on it. Also the NC700X.

I personally had adventure type bikes, so for others there's also the XTZ660Z Tenere from Yamaha which fits perfectly in the A2 category.
