https://i41.tinypic.com/x3h3yd.png

Hi guys. Got myself a 91 Honda Shadow Bobber. Really nice ride. Not dramatically 'ass on the floor' and has a nice riding position. Very happy with it.

I have had a 125 before, and I was happy to just leave it, put petrol in it, oil when needed and ride when required. Happy dais.

However, as this is somewhat of a dream bike, I was wanting to strip it, take the frame down to raw steel (it is quite rough and scraped etc) and in general build from the bottom up polishing all the necessary parts as they need a good buff.

I would not try this on my own, my hope is that I can find a friend who knows his shit and help me.

But where the hell do you learn to strip and rebuild? I guess you need a mechanics mind or an engineers mind for a start.

Are there any services out there that would do such a thing? Once all the parts are off, I can polish and strip myself, just the taking apart and putting back together?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thumbs Up

Haynes manual: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-Shadow-VT-600-750-VLX-1988-2009-New-Haynes-Manual-/400631653203?pt=Non_Fiction&hash=item5d4781e353

Teaches you how to take apart and put back together.

But my advice is if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Bravo Charlie - No license yet. I'm a fresh chicken.

Though been riding 2 wheels on the road since I was 10! (road bikes leading into my 20s) And had plenty of off road riding as a kid (dt125s).

I started it up just today and does she growl... Highly strung is this one!

if you're able to go for it, then go for it. if you're really confident, the other option would be to look at maybe 1 or 2 lessons then tests, or just do tests and no lessons?

Surly I would need lessons as well as tests...

I need to do my CBT as it ran out - also my theory as well as that has also ran out...

it really depends on how confident a rider you are. some people can do their CBT, Theory, then tests. some people can go straight through their DAS and pass in one week from being totally unexperienced.

i used a 125 for 6 months, took 3 or 4 lessons (including Mod 1 practice) and then sat my tests and passed first time, mod 1 no minors and mod 2 with 3 minors so overall i felt i done the right thing, but everyones different

OK yeah.

So CBT definitely required, theory required, but then you say possibly just to go right through to test?

I would obviously need briefing on what to expect from the test wouldn't I.

How many tests are there to sit?

All the details for tests etc are in the new bikers section I believe.

DAS is the same as a normal test basically, just on a bigger bike.

It wouldn't be a good idea to use your new thing if it is eligible, so you'll likely have to go through a school whatever.

Really nice ride.

I was going to question if it was actually nice to ride (it doesn't look it), but I'm presuming you just mean "nice to look at".

CBT, Theory, Mod 1, Mod 2.

if you were feeling really confident on things then by all means go for it. it's all down to how you're feeling on the roads mate.

have a pop over to the newbies section, have a look at some other people's experiences, and see what you think Thumbs Up

Thank You I will head there now.

G - In reply to your question, I can confirm it is comfortable to sit on, as that is all I have done as so far.

I have not actually ridden it yet.

Got to say I have a fondness for the bobber style; hopefully have one in the future using something like a GSXR engine. Personally if that was mine I would do something like this. Move the indicators, rear light and number plate.

Then the next stage would be to get a Burgundy seat on there add a bit of color to the tank, also get some highway pedals on there (don't like normal rubber pedals).

Image of where I'd have the indicators/rear light and number plate.

ing to keep that rear wheel exposed.. Though possibly think of some ingenious way to make a fold out mudguard should the shit hit the fan (literally).

Yeah the indicators definitely have to be moved, it looks like the rear end of one of them SMASH characters from the 60s.

I quite like it Thumbs Up .

On the exposing raw steel thing - don't, just don't, you'll ruin it. It will rust away before your eyes and be one of those eBay disasters you see from time to time "just needs some welding".

If you want to sort the rough frame out, get it blasted and then powder coated in a colour of your choice (i.e. black, and only black).
