Alright everyone,
I know I know it's a cruiser but hear me out.
My mate has one, it's chopped but he's got an electrical problem with it, which he says the mechanic has said it's an earthing problem, something is draining the electrics.
I have recently got a CG up and running, the 1981 beast!!, and he's asked if we would swap. Now I'm unsure about it, I know nothing about these bikes except they're GPz500 engined - which can't be bad, though downsleeved. Could this electrical thingy be a lot worse than I think, I've always wanted to get the CG up and running sell on, slightly upgrade or whatever and continue.
Please BCF, speak. ____________________ I'm Sam; Northern, Ginger, Lover

You need an ammeter with a reasonably high amp rating.
Connect it in series with the battery positive with the ignition off and it'll show you if there's any earth leakage. A few milliamps is ok, a few hundred is not.
NB: If you connect one in the milliamp range in your battery positive thern turn on the ignition, you'll blow the ammeter, don't switch the bike on.
Assuming you find a high earth leakage, start unplugging then re-attaching electrical componants one at a time until the current drops off. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |
