Are there stats for bike thefts by area? I got to thinking about this after the recent thread on a bike stolen in southhampton and comments which suggest S'hampton has a particular problem with motorcycle thieves.

If you live in an area which has a chronic theft problem surely it would serve local bikers well to start kicking up a fuss with local MP's and high ranking Plods?

Pigs work to stats now. Vehicle theft is difficult to solve therefore spending time investigating it won't help their stats.

They won't do shit.

Think yourself lucky. 1,565 bikes stolen in 6 months where I live.

I could probably get a bike, put it in a van and get it home from Southampton in 2 hours, stripped by the end of the day and on its way to Bratislava.

If I could do that, imagine what a seasoned thief could do... Neutral

What a silly suggestion Exclamation

To actually expect an MP to do something (other than claim expenses).

Let alone to ask a copper to do something useful as opposed to handing out speeding tickets.

Not at all. I work in voluntary sector social work and I use MPs to get things done especially by statutory bodies, including the police. Colleagues spend months trying to make headway with a variety of clients problems but I find if I just go straight to the local MP then I get quicker results. Its easy to be sceptical about MPs but you would be surprised how effective they can be when you push them to action. Its especially true with statutory bodies, I don't what they do but they can really put the wind up local government and the Police and NHS.

I think the lack of action regarding bike thefts on the part of bikers is probably one of the great advantages that criminals have.

Get a LWB van, stick in half a dozen, take a mate... Profit.

Would it not be possible to match up the engine number to the original documents though?

Maybe your on to a good punishment for bike thieves, bundled into a van, stripped then transported to eastern Europe or maybe Afghanistan, maybe contract the Taliban for criminal justice services instead of Group 4.

Nothing to stop you pulling up to a bike with steering lock, you and a mate with 2 blocks of wood through the wheels, drag it, lift it, off you go.

So? if you had a lorry and a winch you could do the same with a car. And pro car thieves do. The vast majority of so called "pro" bike thieves will just be well tooled up scum. There's nothing professional about having a van with false plates on or owning a pair of big bolt cutters. I deal with a lot of criminals some of who would be considered "professional". To a man they are lazy half witted arseholes who just accept they will spend a good part of their life in jail. Put enough barriers to their activities and be more effective in investigating as well as longer sentencing and they soon go off and do something else.

I really would have thought Southampton will be towards the better end of the scale of good to bad places. I saw in the other thread people saying that they'd heard of lots of bike thefts in Southampton, but of course if they live in Southampton or know people in Southampton then they're going to hear about.

I wouldn't have thought contacting your local MP or plod about it would make any difference whatsoever cos you'd be telling them things that they already know.

I'm not saying notify your MP of every theft or expect the MP to get action on one individual theft, although if my bike was stolen and plod did not pull their fingers out I would kick up major shit. Im suggesting that if an area has a particularly bad problem then a group of local bikers start pressing for action rather than just having a moan about it on 'tinternet.

Good luck with that. Even for MAG who you'd expect to be up for something like this.

I sent local York MAG a query about what they'd be doing about bikes being banned on the Lendal Bridge in York (together with cars, lorries, coaches, although local buses, taxis, push-bikes royal mail vans and council vehicles allowed). I'm still waiting for a reply.

I'm guessing actually doing something would cut into time down the pub chewing the cud. They might even have to talk to people outside their clique.

I think the visordown article is too broad with just the initial parts of a postcode, to be that useful. I live in SP postcode which it puts as Salisbury and ranks 57th. Where I live a fair few miles from Salisbury you could actually leave your keys in the thing and come back to find it still there (of 70+ crimes in my town last year the closest to a vehicle theft was a few stolen push bikes).

There's a webshite somewhere that lists postcodes in a bit more detail and ranks them how insurers do, that would give a better idea. Or the Police publish crime maps for areas so you can actually look where specifically thefts are occurring for an area.

Infact here it is https://www.motorcarinsuranceuk.co.uk/post-code-ratings.php

Different insurance companies and different brokers use different rankings. Websites/lists like that one only give you an idea.

And that list is 5 years old. Wink
