The State of New Mexico is trying to pass a law that will require Breathalyzers in every new car, truck and Motorcycle.
House Bill 126 has passed the House and was on the way to the Senate.
If the Senate passes it and the Governor signs it, by 2008 Evey New Vehicle, and in 2009 Every Used Vehicle sold in New Mexico, must have ignition interlocks and breathalyzers installed.
If this passes, you can be sure that other states will follow. Maybe Yours.
To help fight this I have joined a organization named Responsibility In DUI Laws. Unlike other organizations I belong to this one Does NOT Charge To Join,

whats wrong with this law? it means there will be less drunk drivers on the road, to me it sounds like a good idea, it protects you and other drivers, so whats the problem with it? Thinking

I think it's a bloody good idea, just imagine campaigning against this so you have the right to drive pissed and take a chance on getting caught...... then some drunken arsehole mows down your wife and kid! DEAD!!!!!!! Now you’re on your own, the driver probably got a year or two and a slapped wrist…. you lost your family!!!!!! How much of a twat would you feel then????? Evil or Very Mad

people will then just find another way to bypass it, like using compressed air or something to fool it into thinking you're ok to drive... a good idea but it'll never stop drink drivers!

Probably not a good idea. Can just imagine people blowing into the interlock for a fee.

Also just after this would come out, you car would probably then immobilise itself if you broke a speed limit.

sorry, but I really think this is a damn fine idea!!!!!! NOTHING will ever be foolproof and yep, I'm sure it will be simple to bypass, but ANYTHING that does something to limit the pain caused by some drunken fuckpig that takes out your family 'cause he's had "one too many" has gotta be a good thing, no???????

Drink-driving is stupid and dangerous. However I don't believe measures like this are the appropriate way to tackle it.

It might seem like a fine idea in principle, but to me it's just another example of increasingly heavy-handed government.

Irrespective of whether the technology would actually work properly (I doubt it would), surely it is better to encourage people to take responsibility for their own lives?

Or, how about an IQ test before the car would start?

It's a good idea in theory but it's also a scary prospect as it seems like we move closer and closer to a computer run world and we lose more and more of our independence.

I'm not talking about just this topic, but many Sci-fi writers have visions of what the future is going to be like (Terminator, Demolition Man, Judge Dredd, Fifth Element, Minority Report) and while some of these ideas are very good in theory they are also quite scary at the same time. It seems like there's less and less we can control. A great idea, but makes me feel a little uneasy at the same time as the big brother factor ever increases in our lives
