The standard monkey weighs in at around 70kg dry so add a 125 sports engine and its rather fast to say the least.

I've read on the monkey forum that some 125 converted monkeys crack 100mph, that must be fun that low to the ground!

I will be SORNing the monkey soon and retiring it to my mums garage as when we go to Oz it'll be staying here for maybe when we come home? Shame as like Binge has proved, little bikes can be fun and there were lots that I wanted to do to mine.

Was the TZR conversion straight forward enough?

ok to answer some questions

does confirmed 85mph at 9000rpm redline is 10.9k rpm and will pull there easily in top gear so on current gearing 90mph is perfectly reasonable.

but its been built for blasts not top speed Razz
current engine is a little worn so not putting out top power i am sure but still pulls like a train.
i would guess complete weight of bike to be around 70kg its very light and amazingly with the upgraded suspension and forks handles the power quite well although i am currently fitting a steering damper to improve this further. its amazingly stable for such a small machine.

obviously this was not a bolt in conversion all new engine mounts needed to be made along with a inlet manifold and numerous other bits and pieces.
if i was doing it over i would use a extended monkey frame that are now available which would leave u plenty room to mount a rad infront of the engine.
biggest hassle has been a working powervalve i would say. if you use a tzr engine then the later spec 4DL would be much better.
overall though i am really happy with the way its turned out it is such a hoot to ride.

CoooooooooR! i like that.

must be scary though, 85mph that low. madness! mind you not as bad as it could be, least you havent got standard rims. 12 inch are they?

is this a chink one? if it is definately cant blame you for changing the wheels reading about the spokes coming undone lol.

thinking about a different exhaust at all? nice stainless cones maybe? Very Happy

great work!

Certainly looks like a chink one. And yes, The standard Chinkey wheels are dreadful. My spokes came loose on the pit bike after a couple of weeks! Shocked

CNC is the way to go. Thumbs Up

I've got a picture of a TZR'd monkey bike on my HDD somewhere. Something I've been really interested in putting into a pit bike. Can pick up the frames for next to nothing. Carry out all the work, then just swap the frame into my current bike.

Although I've got my eyes on a near on 200cc 4t engine. It's a kit you can buy for the 160cc YX engine, And can easily see 20bhp at the rear wheel. So I'm in two minds on which route to take.

The smoker looks great, But how much does your tank hold. I am lucky to get 2 liters in mine, So I think it would be a pain in the arse running pre mix. Would be filling it up far too often.

probably do well if using the original wheels to have all the spokes undone, put threadlock on and do them back up to torque again, if you had the kit avalible and a rough idea what torque lol. doubt they do this when they produce them...

two stroke premix wise why not just mix in a large jerry can for fuel like a mate of mine does for his crosser, but then that'd be a bit hard to do on the move on a long monkey run for instance :/ or maybe put the two stroke in a marked bottle and take it with you during refuels, so you use the exact ammount. but then youd have to fuel up at the right time. lol

200cc 4 stroke sounds like a good way to go if your looking at practicality on a run though dunno how well it'd do on reliability, imagine that'd be fairly high maintence?

would just love to have a go at making a monkey project but just not got the money Sad

It's quite simple to do at the pump, carry a bottle of 2 stroke around with you, when you fill up, have a look how much you have put in and do the maths.

Let's say you were running 32:1 and you had just filled up with 3.46 litres of petrol, out comes your phone, 3.46/32 = 0.108125 So pore 100 ml of oil in, then add a few more drips.

Sounds about right, maybe a little more.

Woyuld cost me a little more than a fiver and that was never empty. 250 miles to the tank wasn't bad either!

the 2 or 3 liters lasts quite a while. I dont have a fuel gauge OR a res tank. So I just fill it up every time I go out on it.

So it takes roughly 90p - £1~ a day.

Get some FOOKING funny looks when I'm squeezing 94p into my tank! Laughing

Looking at that really compact TZR powered monkey bike give's me an idea. It would be a bit less impressive and a bit neater and better visually to look at being air cooled, but surely the Honda H100S lump being designed for a bike with a spine frame, would fit very nicely into a Monkey bike like it was made for it maybe? I know about 11bhp isn't anything like as much poke as a TZR engine, but i bet the H100 lump would have gone very well in a Monkey bike, and with the short wheelbase it would have made for a seriously easy bike to wheelie!

the pic posted of the other tzr powered monkey was owned by a guy called Gaz since been sold on and being rebuilt.

The wheels are aftermarket 10" i have finally got the steering damper fitted and its riding superb now and feels even more stable well chuffed.

fuel tank takes a 5litre can easy think they are 2 gallon as standard for the gorrila tank and one gallon for a standard monkey tank. atm i pre mix but i do have the proper pump ect will will go back on at some point as pre mixing is a pain on the monkeybike runs
i get approx 85 miles on a tank as usually its flat out Laughing would do more i am sure now its better setup.

over the winter its getting rebulit engine and i would also love a shiny exhuast but funds may not allow that for a while Crying or Very sad reason being it would have to be a custom made one and they don't come cheap.

someone mentioned doing same conversion on a pitbike frame i had exactly the same idea would make a awesome fun dirt bike there is a KSR thats had this conversion and the athena bore up kit fitted lot and lots of awesome fab work, time and money went into it.
but i would also like to do another using a extended monkey frame and a nsr 125 lump as i love 2 stroke power thats year of motox bikes i guess even if i wanted a fast sports bike i would still buy a RS250 or similar.
