Who saw the new BBC2 series on the street gangs of post WW1 Birmingham? I thought it was brilliant put I am biased because it is set in the area where I live and the streets named are only a couple of hundred yards from my house, also......
Peaky Blinders is fiction but the Blinders did exist, my grandfather's brother was a peaky and a barefist boxer. He was paid to throw a fight in Aston but took the win anyway, for this he got an axe planted in his skull but managed to walk a mile to the General Hospital in Corporation St where it was removed and a steel plate bolted to his head for the rest of his life. Punch Hunt, I never met you but you sound one hell of a hard bar steward.

Fighting gangs were prominent plague in this part of Manchester in the late 19th Century.

Formation of lad's clubs and football clubs (one even ended up being called Man City) was seen as a way of combating the idle and violent youth of the day.

I have the book Vincent, IMHO it is rather poor as it relies only on the archives of the press as a source of information when then there are still people like my Mother and until recently her older sister who had direct contact with the gangs and could have given the bare facts some flesh and a pulse.
Where did you pull those photos from?

I recorded it, I will probably start watching it after I've recorded a few more episodes so I can watch more than one episode in a row. It's a thing I do. Cool

Thanks mate as I said the action is set in Small Heath where I live, the pub that is central to the plot is The Garrison Tavern about a mile from my house. My house is a newish build but one side of my garden is a very old brick wall that was part of a back to back slum (one of the reasons I bought the house).

Have you seen the book of Mugshots From Birmingham Prison circa turn of the century? there are some heartbreaking pictures in there of kids sent away for 5 months hard labour for stealing a piece of bread......as well as some some pretty rough looking cases.

No, can you link to it please?

This is the area where the program is set but the map is from 1864 not 1919. My road does not exist, it is in the field to the East of Muntz St (Muntz St is named after George Fredrick Muntz)

The TV show looks good and Cillian Murphy is a good actor. I'll check it out.

Yes, I caught it on iplayer this evening.

Bit pissed so can't make a judgement on the acting and shoot, but it looked good and held my attention for an hour, which is something. Sam Neill was better than I was expecting.

Will series link. Two thumbs fresh. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

One could say the same about the Vikings, The Tudors or the Visigoths. Your point is?

Totally the same. Only the style of dress, luxury items and modern technology and methods of communication changes. Pack the poor together, let them stand idle and watch them vent their frustrations out on each other.

You only complain when some privileged kid gets stabbed up and killed, when it becomes a media sensation, a "senseless attack". Hope they don't get educated enough, aware and politicised, otherwise the structure of the ruling class is fucked. Orwell realised the true power of the proles, if it could be harnessed, and he's not the only one, "Ye are many, they are few".

Keep em thick, drunk and drugged out of their skulls, and distracted , focused on meaningless, trivial shit. Make use of their frustration and hate and focus it with propaganda against demon bogey figures. It helps if the latter are Johnny foreigner, of a different race, colour, language and religion. A good war now and then helps wipe out the excess scum in your own country, tires them out for a bit and boosts the economy, so your mates in the city and on the inside can make lots of money. Don't worry we won't have their sons get killed, unless they really want to go out into the fray for some sport.

Er... irony. Today's chav is tomorrows anti hero.

In 50 years there'll be movies about The Burberry Crew.
