My tenant has recieved a phone call today from someone saying that they have arranged with me to have some work done on the boiler flue, obviously I haven't.They told the tenant that they will come tomorrow to do the work, he contacted me and like I said, I know nothing about it.
The phone number left when they made the call was 0151 547 0200, has anyone had a call from these? when I try to ring these I get the "number is out of order message"
Strange thing is they knew the tenants name, but we have recently had "free" loft insulation, maybe it ties in there somehow.
I have told the tenant if anyone turns up not to let any work begin, to ring me or the police.

We had a similar thing recently in the block of flats we're renting. Everyone was given a 'official' looking letter about free cavity wall insulation 'being done for the building' with some hand written rubbish on it like 'URGENT - PLEASE TREAT AS URGENT AND CONTACT IMMEDIATELY TO COMPLETE YOUR ARRANGED WORK'.

I realised it was dodgy from the outset and binned it, a week later we had another note and I saw the van outside from the company. Went downstairs to see if I could find the guy - turns out he was in one of other flats about to take a 'refundable deposit' for the work off one of the old couples that own a flat downstairs Rolling Eyes

They'd been told it was being done on behalf of the building management. Spoke to the guy and he made a lot of confused excuses about how they'd maybe got the wrong block and said he'd go back and talk to his boss. Explained to the old couple it was dodgy and they contacted the police, who advised them to contact trading standards for the meantime. I was quite suprised they didn't take it on personally as surely it qualifies as some sort of fraud impersonating someone whos been contracted to provide 'free' work that isn't free Thinking
