Several of us, about 10 to date, are partaking in a 5 day trip to Europe in the first week of June, nothing of horrific mileages, just a bit of a jolly, 4 nights in hotels and taking in France, Belgium and Luxembourg plus likely a half day or more over the border into Germany.

You book the tunnel and rooms yourself at a total cost of about £135 plus the obvious fuel, food and other expenses.

If this may be of interest to you, the link to main thread is below.

See the thread here.

The posting of this touring thread in general has been pre approved by G

Brief summary of the booking I made, prices might alter very slightly for anyone booking now of course. Took about 15 minutes to do the entire thing Thumbs Up https://i59.tinypic.com/21jztx1.jpg

You would be better off trying the Nurburgring. A nice easy ride through Belgium into Germany. Good roads around the 'ring, good hotels at sensible prices. Couple of days scaring yourselves witless then a saunter back through (very expensive) France.
Don't use Trivago etc. for booking smaller hotels in Germany, they hate these sites with a vengance, just phone, everyone talks very good English.
Best bang for your buck by far. My first trip this year is early May, then June, can't get enough of the place.

It's not one of those trips.

Having a relative noob crash his er-5 on the ring isn't the best introduction into European touring.

All the roads other than the lux to Metz road I ride regularly, all the places except the one in Lille, I've stayed in before. It's just an easy going bimble into euro for those that fancy giving it a go.

It's a relaxing holiday, not a screaming adrenaline fix.

I see your point. Trouble is that France has become mighty expensive over the last five years or so. A decent city center hotel was 65E for a double, now nearer 110E. Same sort of price differential with meals... and beer!
Plus the frog filth have taken to the roadside fine 'tax' with rare French dedication. As far as I am concerned (IMHO) France only gets interesting south of Trois on the eastern side, Dijon is where the really good bits start, (Alpine roads etc.).
For a nice relaxing ramble, the Cherbourg peninsular with the D day landing sites is very interesting and then an easy ride over to Ypres (Iper) for the evening last post ceremony, especially as this is the 100th anniversary of WW1.

Totally agree France very expensive now. Ride down to the Eifel region - great roads - much cheaper.

I never see it as being expensive but then I don't tend to be in the touristy places, regular locals places and f1 hotels and it's all cheap for me.

Always see people loading their car up with 'cheap' wine at the eurotunnel shop and it's the most expensive place you'd ever want to buy it.

Luxembourg is the place to get fags/tobacco etc but not too much as they'll only take it all off of you.

50g golden virginia is something like £5, petrol will set you back about a quid a litre.

Admittedly it was Paris and it was an event (Frogs V Brits rugby) but a work colleague has just got back and he reckons the weekend cost him the thick end of 800 quid and they only stayed one night.

You can knock off £100 for the stadium ticket, but beer at E10 a pint and food prices to match, pushes the costs up substantially.

I can see peoples points about the pricing - for me personally i'm not seeing it as expensive but then i'm going on a very tight budget.

The hotels side of things is covered and as Marms said the F1 rooms are dirt cheap.

Foodwise i'm intending to pick up whatevers cheapest along the way in general shops/burger vans and the like to keep me full - for 5 days I can get by on some sandwiches and bottles of water if I must Razz Few beers would be nice but its optional, so if the cost gets too much i'll just keep it all for petrol which is the only cost i'm concerned about really.

Done, and pretty much an open invite to anyone who's ever in the area. I can certainly show you where a couple of bars are, even if the house is too small for a guest room.

That explains the 10+ petrol stations on every road out of Luxemburg the other side of the border Laughing

I don't see that at all, €50-60 gets you a decent city centre hotel whenever I've tried, although I do tend to book late. Maybe you've just been picking the wrong times of year?

Restaurants are cheap in comparison to the UK, although they don't have gastropubs. Beer is comparable but wine is dirt cheap.

And roadside 'tax'? I've done probably 10,000km above the limit and am yet to even see le cops...

Sounds like you're just repeating what you've heard and maybe a visit to the middle of Paris in half term?

Same here.

I do probably 20,000 miles + in euro every year and i've been talked to by french plod twice, just for random checks and by german several times, usually when coming back across the border from Czech.

No fines, ever.

I've never paid more than about £40 for a room for the night, even in Paris you can get into a room for £25, some don't like the f1's but for me, getting my head down somewhere warm, clean and dry for little money is a bigger priority than not having to go to the trouble of walking 10 metres to have a shower.
I never get the chance to book early, I have had notice today that i'm off to Germany tomorrow, it doesn't give much time so I will just use booking.com when i'm too tired to carry on.

I do usually buy food in a supermarket and cook it myself but on occasions I do eat out, it's never silly money and beer always seems very cheap.

Yes, I admit it. I will not stay in budget hotels that are usually out on the periferique. We stay Centreville, right in the bar and restaurant areas. After 400-500 mile days I need a bit of pampering.
Brother is a car lease manager for a large international building engineers firm. All traffic tickets come to him initially, mostly UK but more and more continental as the integrated traffic regulations start to bite. The French seem to be more aggressive these days

500 miles is an average day, i've slept in a layby just outside Amsterdam on the bike with my feet on the bars after an overnighter to deliver at 8am, getting a room at 8am for a few hours is next to impossible, I just grab it while I can.

I've almost planned to get a room in Netherlands thurs night, there is one I stayed in before in Venlo, right on the border of Germany/Netherlands.

In the meantime, i'll be grabbing a few winks as and when, tunnel is 01:23 thurs morning and delivery is by noon, by the time i get to venlo Thursday night it'll be 800 miles down and in need of a bed.

Hairy chested biker indeed! I'm 66, riding a 'blade, takes it out of you after a long play on the Alpine roads. Nice hot bath, get changed into smart casual, wander around the bars until dinner time, take in the sights. I think I prefer my way to be honest.....
