Just passed my mod1 and mod2 and needed my first bike. After doing my research I bought a Honda VFR 800 pre vtec (98). Great engine, awesome sounding V twin, loads of torque, loads of power (for a newbie). Really comfy riding position, great seat for you or your pillion. Honda almost over engineered these when they built them back then so they are reliable. Whether commuting or blasting at the weekend, or touring Europe the bike will do it with ease. I don't think I will need to move up to a litre sports bike too soon so another reason it's great for a first bike.
Lovely safe feeling to the handling you can sling it around and it will keep up with faster sports bikes too. For a beginner I can't think of much wrong with it. For 1500 quid MoT'd and serviced with 32000 on the clock what a great bike. To all you noobs like me try one, more experienced users of this site may disagree, but I love mine. By the way a big thanx to all the users on this site it's been a really helpful place to come for someone new to the bike world. Anyone with experience of this bike who has any advice for me would be greatly appreciated.

Awesome, big fan of the VFRs, they sound epic. Just a note though, VFRs are V4's not V Twins Wink

I love the pre 90s ones, the VFR750 Interceptor, proper looking machine that.

Congrats on the pass! and enjoy the weather while you can Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Sorry V4 noob error. thanx for the congrats, passed mod 1 on second attempt, foot down on u turn, and passed mod 2 first time. Did my mod1 on a sv650 and mod2 on a Bandit, no sv on mod 2 as another student was using it. The only mods on the vfr when I bought it was an aftermarket can and heated grips, I added a dark smoked bubble screen to go with the bikes colour which is black. The bike came out the factory yellow but the 1st owner sprayed it black within the first 12 months ( not through accident damage, I checked), strange decision though, who knows why you would respray a virtually new bike so soon.

Failed mod 2 twice, passed mod 1 first time... so i'm doing the opposite of the norm. Mod 1 was a right bitch though.

Got myself a Varadero 125 for the time being as getting the tube to work and back sucks dick. Will re-attempt mod 2 when time and moneys allows, hopefully with a few more road miles under my belt and less nerves/stupid fuckups. Thumbs Up

Only ever hear brilliant things about the VFRs. Certainly the pre-VTEC ones anyway.

Allround does everything brilliant bike.

Congrats on passing.

on-topic. I quite fancy these in all honesty, but am scared off by the maintenance on them? my mate's still trying to sway me towards an SV as a first bike as they'll be easier to work on... just how nasty are they for home maintenance? i'm talking pre-VTEC here though

Will ask my friend, I know he's had a bit of trouble getting the oil filter off, said it'd be "a billion times easier" if he could get it on a ramp even just a few inches high

Never ridden a cbf1000, the VFR has loads of power for me as a first bike, also the way it's delivered is great for your average road ride, plenty of low down torque and when you get the revs north of about 9000 it really flys. Not that heavy a bike for me, as I'm 6ft and 15stone.
