I have been reading a lot about winter storage but obviously not taking it in Embarassed

My bike has been stored up for around 4 months in the garage wrapped up Very Happy now I normally do an oil change before but was intending on using the bike, and one thing led to another and me being a procrastinating tit never got round to doing it Crying or Very sad
Now its Feb and I will prob not use it til March ish ..is it worth me doing it now or wait till later and if and when I do it should I change it without starting it up and letting it run to temp...or just do it from cold Rolling Eyes

There seems to be so many conflicting comments is there a definitive answer or does it not matter Cool

Just before you're ready to use the bike, go through the oil change. Warm the bike up to temp first as it'll make draining the oil easier. You may also want to consider changing the filter at the same time. Just make sure you have enough oil (check the spec in the manual as to how much you'll need when also changing the filter.)

Is that going to be ok as some are saying with the bike lying for so long that bits of crap and moisture will be sent through the engine if you start it up before doing the oil change Shocked
Just want to be sure and do it the right way Wink

Sounds like youre overthinking this oil change.

There might be a little bit of condensation in the oil, but you're only running your bike long enough to warm the oil up.

How old is the oil in the bike?

I think you're worrying too much, if the oil is relatively fresh I'd just ride it. If you're set on doing a change then take it out for a decent spin, get the oil up to temperature, then do the change.

Hi

Might be a bit of condensation, but the damage is mainly done by leaving the old oil in the engine (combustion gases are acidic, and small amounts of those blow by the rings and contaminate the oil, hence acidic oil).

If you don't warm the oil up before doing an oil change then the oil will be very thick and very slow to drain out.

All the best

Keith

The difference between doing it now and doing it at the start of March is only 3 weeks... not a significant time difference. If you want to do it now, do it now, else do it in March. This is not a dilemma where the wrong choice = catastrophe.

I'd do it in March.
