so slowly putting my bandit back together, fitting my new shiny stainless bolts (replacing the coloured in rusty ones) most of the coloured in screws have ptfe on the threads?

anyways...so i put the tank back on after refitting the carbs an notice rust bubbles near where the seat rubs, so prodded bubbles with a screwdriver an it crumbles to leave a 1" hole feck!!

im guessing you cant repair it?

Have welded one before empty the tank let it air out for a while then fill with sand and weld it up

If it has rusted through in one area then the rest of it likely to be weak. You could try brazing a patch on a home if the metal is too thin to use a hobby MIG welder on.

Bear in mind that whatever you do, you'll have to do some painting afterwards.

I would replace it, Bandit tanks can't be that expensive.

As for finding PTFE on the bolt threads, it's a new one on me. Maybe someone has used stainless fittings before and the alloy thread has corroded. I would run a tap down each of the threads, and use a thin smear of copper grease on the new bolts. I also wouldn't use stainless bolts in an alloy engine.

Plenty of Tanks on Ebay for around £60 with best offers taken on them so could probably get for a fair bit less. If you can find a colour match it'd be less hassle than welding the old one.

I'd never use sand!! Any missed on the clean up could fuck up his engine!

I have welded my petrol tank on my old GPZ. Swill it out with water then fill with water and leave for a few days. I recently made a log burner from an old calor gas tank, when left filled with water, empty out then offer up a naked flame at a distance (tape a match to a piece of stick or something). It'll be ok. I've also welded car petrol tanks after washing out then stood on the tank and dropped a match inside! Laughing

The only problem is when you grind back the weld it ends up being porous. Get it brazed or replace with a SH tank (probably cheaper)
