I've just realised that I make a slight fuck up yesterday when I took my KMX out for a little run and filled it up..
At the petrol station I added 400ml of two stroke oil and then chucked in 4litres of unleaded. Unless I'm mistaken that means I've mixed at 10:1 instead of the 40:1 that I was after.
My complete lack of simple maths has worked out that I should have used 100ml for 4litres or 125ml for 5litres of fuel which would be better. Please someone confirm this who can add up, before I go near my bike again!
I think I'm right in saying that I would need 16litres of unleaded to make 400ml of oil into 40:1, and I don't know what the fuck I was doing yesterday apart from day dreaming in the sun?
I think I need to find some 125ml containers or test tubes etc, that I can pre-fill and carry in my jacket or under the seat, to protect my bike from noob maths? |

I use a big sticker on the side of my little 250ml two stroke bottles that says in huge letters 40:1 = 25ml/ltr on the side of it incase I'm feeling derpy and under oil it! ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

Thanks G etc for the useful tip on noob proofing my pre mixing containers!
Yeah, I was out putting about 10running in miles on the fresh motor, and thinking about how nice a day it was really while throwing oil and fuel in!
Blue, I did get an oil pump with the bike when I brought it, but it was a crusty looking thing in the bottom of a box of grubby spares. The previous owner obviously thought better of re-using a 28year old pump that he wasn't sure would even work I guess.
I know it detracts from originality etc, but for the amount of miles a year I'm going to put on it, running it on pre-mix isn't a big deal for me, and I know a few 2stroke restorers that won't even entertain the idea of using autolube on old or expensive 2strokes. As I understand it, the pumps are non DIY re-buildable anyway?
G, your right about the fuel ratio's being all to cock, I did about 4miles back home after the re-fuel, and there was probably a litre or so of 40:1 already in the tank. It did seem a bit smokey though!
I suppose it could have been a bit lean, but it's running +2 sizes on the MJ, and I'll either try and find big enough containers to correct my fuel ratio, or just drain it all out, and use it in the 4stroke lawnmower instead.
I will get round to making the oil tank that's still fitted on the bike a kind of dispenser even if I just fit a little tap on the oil line and carry a graduated container too. |
