2003 Yamaha R6 Steering Wobble?

Hi all,

I've put my plans for a trans Africa trip on hold for the moment as I'll need a lot more planning and money - and need to figure out how to keep my online business alive in the process.

However, in the meantime I'm in Australia and want a toy for a couple of months before I return to Europe for the Spring/Summer. One bike I've seen is a 2003 Yamaha R6. It seems to be in relatively good condition although it was "dropped" and a crash bobbin is broken with some small scratches on the side which you can't see in the photos.

Still, I might get it for $4200 if the damage is only superficial and hardly noticeable.

Question is, I don't want to fork out for a steering damper and I hear these are twitchy on the front. I like spirited road riding and had an SV650 before (never experienced a tank slap), so wondering how necessary it is for the 2003 R6?

Removed the steering damper from my wobble prone tl1000s and didn't get any wobbles. Not a thing ad that was riding it pretty hard. I'd not bother with one.

They're not as bad as the ZX636R of the same era, so no they don't need a damper.

Thanks, guess I'll go for it regardless then. May be a 2005 model in the mix but it's a little too expensive. Just seen the white 2007 model as well, sexy bike.
