I don't know if i'm prematurely senile or stupid, but I am fed up trawling websites trying to understand the rules.

1) I have had a full driving license for donkeys years, but limited experience on a motorbike of any kind.

2) After I showed an interest in motorbikes, as a present my family booked me a CBT which I did and completed successfully 22 months ago.

3) I believe that if in the next 2 months, I bought a 'learner-friendly' 125 and insured myself to ride it, I can do as long as i have 'l' plates.

My main question is ;

If I don't get a bike yet, in 2 months my CBT validity will expire and I would have to do it again before i bought and insured a 125 bike. Is this the case? OR would I have to do my CBT again after the 2 year expiry date regardless of whether I am actively driving a 125 or not?

Thanks for reading this and in anticipation of some guidance.

Regards,

Les

CBT expires after 2 years, period.

After 2 years you must do another CBT

If within 2 years you pass your MOD 1 and MOD 2 you no longer have to renew your CBT.

This.

A CBT cert is valid for 2 years from the date BEFORE your current one was signed. So you either have to pass the test before that date or do another CBT. If you do it again before the expiry then you might get a discount as it is just a requal rather than a full day.

I am not quite sure what you are asking. The posts above cover the main point.

However when your CBT expires you can't ride a bike on the road until you have redone your CBT (with the exception of riding on your next CBT training day). No reason you can't have a gap between this CBT expiring and doing your next one; you just can't ride a bike for that time. It doesn't affect any of your other licence groups.

By the way, if you have had a car licence for long enough (forgotten the exact date, but late 1990s) then it does count as a full moped licence.

All the best

Keith

Don't forget to do a theory test if you go down the route of mod1 mod2

If you're planning to buy a bike and keep riding, whether its just a 125 you're after or something bigger down the line i'd try crack on with your main test. The cost isn't too bad, especially if you can get by without too many lessons - and after a few years riding the repeat CBT costs will soon add up [not to mention get quite tiresome and tedious].

Get the theory booked now as thats valid for 2 years after a pass so you have the next 2 years to start and complete your training/license whenever you want, without having to pospone it because of booking/failing/retrying the theory test at the last minute before you want to try get the license.

It will teach you a fair bit more about riding in terms of safety and techniques as well - nothing on the me advanced post-test training you can do, but compared to a CBT its very valuable in my opinion Thumbs Up
