On my Yamaha SR I have noticed that my power has decreased dramatically over the last few weeks. At first I thought was a fuel air mix problem as I could smell fuel, so I took off the carb, cleaned it and reset gloat heights and mixture to manufacturers specs. This did not improve or decrease performance, I could still have the same backfiring problems, when it was cold I noticed that fumes were coming from the exhaust in two differnt places and found the hole on the exhaust, could this be the main cause of having performance problems and not being able to reach its higher speeds?

Yes, holy exhausts definitely impact your performance. There's numerous methods for patching them up and their success rates vary. If you intend to keep the bike a while and can afford it, you should find a second hand pipe for an SR no problem.

Had a rather large hole break through right before my tour of France a few years back. As a temporary fix Holts GunGum worked well for me but had to be reapplied every 1000 miles. Basically just a paste you apply to the affected area that hardens like a resin. You can also get strapping by the same company that seals better and lasts longer.

In the long run though your best bet is either a second set of pipes (could spray with BBQ paint to protect from the weather) or a set of SS pipes. Decent investment if you ask me.

Thanks for your replies guys most appreciated Smile, I've tried that technique of the resin paste, and that has improved it a lot which would be a temp fix until I get my new exhaust on a couple of weeks but thanks again for the advice Smile

I'd use exhaust wrap with firegum or the exhaust bandage stuff
