Hey,

Bought a waterproof phone holder and decided to actually charge it as well. Thing is, I'm about as mechanically capable as Jeremy Clarkson Laughing If it can't be done with a hammer, somebody is paid to do it.

Anyway, I'd rather try this myself. I found this and wondered if it was the right thing to buy, and is it easy to wire it but not directly to the battery? The previous owner decided that heated grips were the ideal thing to wire to that instead and now I can't access the battery anyway thanks to the key not opening the side panel Rolling Eyes

I've got the Haynes manual for the YBR as well, if that helps.

Yeah, but that doesn't help me wire a 12v USB plug in does it? I know I need to get that sorted out but I don't know how difficult wiring this in is.

That wiring is as easy as it gets really
Red to positive
Black to negative/ground/frame

Perhaps the lock pick suggestion is to remind you that
you really ought to be able to get at the battery.
That would be my first job, not the second.

Yeah I do plan on doing it when I get a chance. Not entirely sure how I'm going to do it without brute force though Laughing

Is that straight to the battery or via the headlight or similar?

I would (and did) go ahead and just wire it straight to the battery. You're not going to be leaving anything plugged in to it while off the bike, are you?

You can wire it straight it to the battery, or wire it into the brake light through a relay so it's only getting power when the bike is switched on.

I would recommend doing it straight to the battery, that's what the kit is designed for, and its already fused inline so thats good.

I fitted a 12v DC socket on mine so I can use usb charger or other stuff like tyre inflator when needed (though the latter only whilst the engine is running, drains quite a lot of power). Wired it up in parallel with my heated grips sharing a 10A fuse.

Looks like yours isn't a mountable one, but I mounted mine on the left bolt that secures the instrument cluster - also useful to note that I connected the black/earth wire to the chassis (under the aforementioned bolt) so I needed to wire only a single cable from the battery compartment.

No, there's no underseat storage on the YBR and I've got a phone holder thing coming as well (one of these) but I'd never leave anything on charge. The battery is the original (from what I gather from the service receipts) and I'm not sure how good it is.

I make sure nothing is on anyway as my grips come straight from the battery as well. Presumably multiple things can be wired to the battery at the same time? Ideally I want the grips to be done off the brake light or something as that'll be the thing that leaves me stranded somewhere, not a phone charger for a phone that isn't plugged in.

Yeah, once I get to it that is Laughing I reckon the lock is just stuck to be honest. I've bought a waterproof phone case so I presume I can run it up to that and it'll be fine?

Just don't forget to turn them off Wink
Though doing it with a relay off of the ignition or another circuit is a good idea provided it can handle the 4-5 odd amps that heated grips use. Even if you did get stranded, you've got a 2008 model which means you have a kickstarter Thumbs Up

The one on mine is quite stiff, have you tried making sure the key is pushed in so it's a couple of notches in (as far as it will go)? Try squirting some WD-40 in there, works wonders!
