So I passed my car test last week, had my licence sent off to the dvla to have it put on there. I got my licence back today and now I've lost 2 years on my bike pass date, as if I didn't pass until my restriction was up.

I've heard people having this problem before and how it can cause issues with insurance, is there any way to sort this out or are these 2 years just gone now?

They are gone, should have applied for another pre-test so you had two Wink

Do you have a scan of your old one? Send that to insurers.

To be fair I have got another licence lying around somewhere, but this means I then don't tell them I have a car licence, which can only bring premiums down surely?

I'm not sending mine off until my photo needs renewing, for this reason. You're not getting those years back.

My hope is that in 8 years time, 2 years shouldn't make too much difference on my pass date.

That always happens Sam, your paper counterpart will have the date you originally passed.

Hey,
The same thing happened when i had the car entitlement added to my licence.

Surely It simply shows the date from which you have had your FULL unrestricted licence? As When restricted it shows (I am drunk and racking my brains here) A<XXKWH?

Cheers,
Shaun R.

Doh! Not as such. D(V)SA Derek just shreds it and tells the DVLA to issue a new one, or at least that's what he told me when I was daft enough (with hindsight) to let him do it when I passed my bike test.

You're boned. I had a long email conversation with the DVLA about this, and they're not for budging. Their position is that your paper counterpart (while we still have those) will show your previous entitlement. If they haven't sorted themselves out though, then what it will show will be "A2" rather than "A<=25kW" because (paraphrasing very slightly) "screw your face, that's why". They know that's wrong, and confusing, they just don't care.

They did say that they weren't aware of it being a problem for insurance - which it is - but that they'd be happy to "clarify" it for any insurer. Suuuuure.

Do not lose your pass certificate.

When getting quotes, read what you're being asked very carefully. If they only distinguish between "provisional" and "full" licenses, you should be OK. If they ask when you passed your test, even better.

Best of luck, I'm in the same boat. Although I have "lost" my previous licenses, and I may be able to "find" them again if necessary.

Just checked, so it does. Cheers for that, I could only see it causing a ball ache in the future

Look on your paper part at your entitlement history... Its all there.

They did the same to me when I passed my car test in 2012 having passed my bike test in 2004

I lost my 7.5 ton, minibus & towing grandfather rights when I sent my licence back once to get points wiped, didn't notice it for quite a while. They agreed to re-instate them when the pass date of my car licence could only mean I had them. Rolling Eyes

They are going to have my licence again in a couple of weeks as I've got to do my PSV licence soon.

Luckily still got all my pass certificates and a spare licence with just the bike entitlement on there so shouldn't have any problems in the future

Just do a request for copies of all information held on you. They can charge an admin fee of £10. Then if there are any pass certificates etc in you file so to speak you will get a copy.

Then send a copy off stating they have made a mistake and must correct it.

It's easy!! And worth a try for a tenner!

I deliberately keep my old licences and report them lost instead of sending them back for exactly this reason

I passed my car test within my 2 year restriction, so my bike pass date was not altered. So I have all my entitlements on my plastic license already, so hopefully I'll not have to send it off until my photo needs renewing.

You should be okay, my dad is in the same circumstance as you and he's never lost anything. He only has a car entitlement but because he passed in 198-something he has all the grandfather rights of being able to drive a load of stuff and has kept them all.

That being said most insurers (from what I gather anyway) want a copy of your photocard/D740 when you take out a policy so taking a scan and keeping them is definitely worth doing. Takes 30 seconds and could save you a shitload of hassle should the DVLA decide "No sir, you aren't allowed to ride motorcycles. That'll be another 500 quid for your A entitlement please."

My policy when I need a new licence, like others on here, is to "lose" the old one and just cough up the extra ££ for a replacement.

I'm sure if I looked hard enough, the "lost" one would probably turn up in the event of shenannigans.
