Hi peeps could do with some advice please Smile

I have recently got my bike so adding the protective clothing I need bit by bit. Next up is some protective trousers.
I need something with good protection, waterproof, light enough for summer (maybe a zip out liner for the colder winter months) I don't really fancy leather so what options do I have?

Thanks Smile

You'll be looking for textiles then. I got some textiles (can't remember the name now, something Creek possibly) and they did me alright. Think they cost about 30 quid too.

Cheers for that Smile

I should also add they should be easily removable or light enough to walk about in. I got the bike for going out with my camera (read totally pissed off with public transport) so I will be either removing them and dumping 'em in the topbox or wearing them walking about with my camera!

I wouldn't even pay that much. eBay, textile (or cordura) motorcycle trousers, look to pay £35 and up. You won't get Gore Tex quality without paying Gore Tex prices, so I just go cheap. I just got some Reissa branded hi-vis cordura trousers with armour and removable lining for £40, and that's all I'd pay unless I was willing to spring a lot more for genuine Gore Tex.

I'm currently looking for some new textiles and have seen some of the cordura gear online and it's been priced quite cheaply. How do you find it, compaired with 'regular' textile gear ?

I'm interested to know how waterproof/windproof it is and how tough it is, if you happen to go sliding down the road. Non of the shops over here stock it, so I'm unable to physically check the material out myself before purchasing any.

Cordura is what people tend to be talking about by default when they say "textiles". It's not magical, just fairly tough nylon. The merit is that it's cheap, so it can be made thick, or double layered.

It's not in itself waterproof, it needs a layer under it, and that's where the money goes. If it doesn't say Gore Tex, it's not Gore Tex (and sometimes when it does say Gore Tex on eBay ads, it's not).

It's moderately wind resistant, and with a waterproof and thermal layer does a decent job of keeping you warm.

It will melt on a hot exhaust or a long slide down dry tarmac. This being the UK though you're likely to hit something before you melt, or the stitching will give way first.

Go for some kevlar jeans, and buy some cheapo waterproof trousers from an outdoor store. Quechua do a decent pair with unzippable bottoms so you can get them over your boots for only £10 and they are completely waterproof. Many textile trousers will leak in places in heavy enough rain but my Quechua waterproof trousers have never let me down. Just stick them in a rucksack or under a seat, they even fit in the pockets of my textile jacket.

(Quechua is Decathlon btw)

be my pick if i was starting out and buying a few bits here and there Thumbs Up

got a pair of these early last year
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111241733116

ok for the bike, fit reasonably well ( but lets face it they aint levi 501's or anything)
ok of bowling around after a ride out, but probably not best suited to 8 hours of office work after a ride in to work.

Good price, decent fit, tho's not tested the kevlar, yet.thank god Laughing
