This may seem silly but...

I have an 09 Astra (58 reg) with around 75k on the clock, I'm thinking of trading it in for a Jaguar X-type, as it's more comfortable and does more to the gallon.

My car is worth around £4k part ex, for that I'll get around a 04-06 plate Jag with roughly 50k on the clock.

What's less of a risk, a newer, higher mileage car? Or an older, lower mileage one?

It's actually impossible to tell without having known the cars from day 1 and, even then, it would only be an educated guess.

There are many bad reasons why an older car would have low mileage. Perhaps it's spent a while off the road after a breakdown or accident. Maybe it was only used on ridiculously short journeys, never allowing the engine and lubricants to reach prime operating temperatures. Conversely, maybe it's been someone's pride and joy, only taken out on high days and holidays for lengthy, yet gentle, jaunts through the countryside. Who knows?

It's all a gamble and sometimes,"Better the devil you know", is a very apt phrase.

I'm hoping that I'll be able to get an idea of how it's been used from the state of the exhaust, mayonnaise in the engine and such.

I'd rather get an older car though, as I bought my current one less than 18 months ago and have lost around £3k in depreciation on it.

Haha yeah, old man style 2.0d. Would rather have the extra grunt of the 2.2d, but I doubt I'd use it much.

Am I getting old?

For the X-type to do significantly better on fuel then wouldn't your petrol? Astra have to be a fairly large engined version?

If I was doing under 10K per year in a car, I would much rarther have a cheaper to service small petrol engine in the most part. An older diesel could have lots of niggly problems, and didn't the X-type suffer with a few electrical niggles.

I like my car's to be simple, and hate gadgets or stupid systems, like ESP, ABS, TCS, anti stall, stop start and auto functions for things like lights, wipers and self closing roof's etc.

Without knowing more information on the actual car's, I would say keep the Astra TBH!

I drove my dads low mileage 53 plate X type around for 12 months.

I put about 25k on it and gave it back with about 80k last year.

Every year it has failed its MOT on something.

It was a comfy and quite yet incredibly dull drive. A boat is less of a boat than the Jag.

It is currently off the road with something fairly major with it. He stuck some injector cleaner (3 or 4 times the amount he should have put in it) and since then its had all 4 injectors replaced, twice. Its still not working, possible fuel pump. It was running after the first set of injectors, but very rough. Jag then had it and put new injectors in and it ran for a couple of weeks. The tank was drained with fresh fuel but the car has just been put to one side after £1200+ quids worth of work has gone knowhere.

But then ive had 2 Astras (albeit one a W reg and one a 53 plate. petrol SRI's 2/2.2 ltr) and one had everything but the engine go, till the engine went and the 2nd was reliable, till the engine went. Laughing

Yeah from what I've heard they are pretty unreliable, if you want something comfy get an E39 bmw diesel.

Probably should mention, nothing went wrong with the Jag whilst i had it. I put it through an MOT when i started using it and it needed some suspension part (bought used for £15) and some tyres.

It ate front tyres.

It failed the MOT when i gave it back because the ABS light was on due to going through a large puddle and needed a new module which was about £80 used.

When i drove it at granddad speeds on a run i would get 60mpg.

When my dad drove it at teenager speeds on short runs it would do under 40mpg.

The girlfriend has a 54 plate x-type. Nice low mileage car but still a posh ford. Currently has the ABS and engine warning lights on (were 'fixed' for the MOT), the radio works now and then when it feels like it. It's a petrol version so goes like stink but costs to run.

However, a recent quick check on Ebay showed you could get the same car for near 2K than the 4K for the one you're looking at.

For that budget you can get a Mondeo TDCI 2.2 or 2.0 , 50k ish miles, Titanium/Ghia x spec and have about 1k change!

Brother in law has the 3.0 v6 4wd X type, forgetting fuel and tyres it costs him a fortune whenever it needs a service/repair.

You had the only engine in an Astra that's probably massively more unreliable than the worst X-type!

The 2.2 Ecotec is a hateful motor that loves eating it's cam chains and grenading the bottom end! Fuck me I'd rarther have a 1.8 K-series under my bonnet than that engine! Laughing

I've had many cars that are renowned for being unreliable.

They're cheap to buy Smile

But they've always been unreliable Laughing

I wonder if it's a case of some just work, others fall apart?

I did originally start looking at a Mondeo, but then... Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag...

Keith has/had one. He occasionally mentions how boring and generally not very good it is.
