Mate of mine has had his Gixxer pinched from Tottenham court road between 9am and 1pm today.
It's in the usual blue white colour scheme and has yoshimura gp exhausts on along with a grab rail.
Reg is SG09FKN. it's his only form of transport so any help would be appreciated. Pics etc will be added later.

This area is heavily covered by CCTV. How are they so brazen to steal from here? Do they just roll in with fake plates on a generic white van and hope they don't get seen in the act?

I think its because they know the police don't really actively pursue bike thefts, so they're free to do as they please.

Given what I've heard and know about the Met, they've likely NFA'd it as "civil matter" by now.

It's easy to chip away at the police, but (more than dozens of) stolen motorcycles are recovered by the police, and not just in the Metropolitan area.

Yes, the Met's stolen vehicle unit has been affected by budget cuts, just like every other department, specialist or mainstream.

When considering the recovery statistics, think about and contrast how easy it is to store, conceal, break and dispose of stolen motorcycle parts, and where the markets are for disposal.

Fisty, I hope it's not too difficult a fix.

That brands hatch raid likely did nothing but fuck over innocent people who probably bought exhausts and such from eBay - yeah I'm sure the thieves were a-shaking in their boots at that one. Likely put people off using the track as well since they don't want to bring their bikes which they've bought/spent money on legitamately to then have them taken off them because someone sold a moody exhaust to them on ebay.

Thing is the police in West Mids were recently pushing a "security marking" scheme, "valued at £30" and offering it for free. Now realistically if a bike gets taken, the likeihood of anyone bothering to check for security markings and cross-referencing them before going on to sell/buy them on ebay and other such places is non-existant.

I felt the money would be better spent installing homebrew GPS systems, the cost of which would be equal to the pointless marking system, yet have a significantly higher chance of the bike being recovered and the thief convicted.

So if I'm just a lowly grunt and I can figure this out, why the fuck can't the police who are paid substantially more than I am to think this shit up?

The Brands-related article helps to illustrate that there's a market for stolen bikes and it isn't just for export, but for breaking and selling parts on. Perhaps it also illustrates that buyers should be more aware too? Reduce the market for stolen property and the thieves have fewer outlets.

I'm not going to argue the whys and wherefores of security markings vs GPS - both have their pros and cons dependent on circumstances; however, when the police are giving something material away through crime prevention initiatives, it's usually because they've obtained it free from the manufacturer, not because they have a bottomless fund of money to spend on one thing or another.

if i was buying a new bike, lets say for example id narrowed my choice down to 2 or 3 that i really liked almost equally and its at that difficult " which one stage ".

what would swing it for me is if one of them had a built - in tracker that activated as soon as the bike was operated / tampered with / moved in a non - standard way and alerted police and alerted me.

the technology exists now - this could be offered in the " options list " when buying new or as standard - anyone whose had a bike nicked before may seriusly consider ticking the yes box for it.

another revenue stream for the makers, perhaps increase sales / steal sales from competitors if offered as standard the way some bike have electric screens / heated seats etc.
