Well I'm 28 and work as a RGN for the NHS which I enjoy. But ever since I was younger I always wanted to join the Army. And it's a itch that has never gone away.

Worth a shot or stay as I'am.

Be a nurse in the army. If you join as a regular soldier, you'll probably be taking a massive pay cut. I'm 28 also and have been in the army over 7 years, I couldn't go back to recruit pay at this age!

With your injury history, I doubt they'll take a second glance.

Suprisingly passed the online medical and got offered a interview. Think the wage is only £14k during phase 1 I'm not sure.

On £26k at the moment.

I wouldn't even pass the online medical. Laughing I'd crash it.

I wouldn't take the pay hit tbh.

Unless you become an officer or join one of the few trades that promotes you to LCpl upon completion of phase 2 training, you'll be a Private for a few years on considerably lower pay than you're on now, and with little chance of operational tours over the next few years, which would enable you to earn a bit more.

Even as a LCpl, you'll only be on 25ish K a year for a while.

Still, it's not all about money. I know quite a few guys who joined at that sort of age for the same reasons, some leaving fairly decent jobs to do so.

My advice, don't bother unless you use your medical qualifications somehow. (QARANC or to join as an officer.

Don't join the Army. Not just the paycut but you'll soon realise it's a bit like teaching, a few join for idealistic reasons and then get out while the majority are counting down to half pension/pension only there because they can't do anything else.

I got out after 6 years and my share of time in shitty places. That's 6 years passed by in an alcoholic blur with a few bouts of bloodshed and all I've got to show from it is a few scars (sold the medals).

If you really have a Rambo fantasy join your local TA unit, you get to play dress up, shoot rifles and go on an annual exercise/holiday and under the 1 Army policy the regs wont call you a TAT anymore (T A Twat)

I wouldn't give up your current job. Join the reserves instead, you'll have both.

You can join the forces as a trained nurse, I've been told by my wife's friend who was considering it, that as a newly qualified you go in at band 7

How true this is, i'm not sure.

From what I can fathom, you do your 14 week basic, then become acting corporal on higher band pay which starts at 27k.

I'd get yourself down to the Armed Forces Careers Office and ask, and also research online on the Army www site. I'd take care though, the AFCOs have in the past very occasionally not given out perfect info, be it unintentionally or not, perhaps through the person you're talking to not being in that trade themselves and knowing all the ins and outs, or trying to talk people into joining as whatever the Army feels they need at the time.

If you join the TA then you'll be able to hold on to your current career and do TA as well. If you go off on tour your job in the NHS will still be there when you get back.

Someone I worked with in a previous department of the civil service did a similar thing, and also had a blog on the departmental intranet when he was on tour in a sandy country. It worked out quite well for him, people knew who he was and he secured a promotion after getting back.

Two things to consider:
1. You're a pussy. You can't even stand up to your girlfriend or her daughter. You won't enjoy nasty men shouting at you in the army.
2. Would you like a free holiday in the Ukraine in a couple of months?

^^^ What Robby said ^^^
My first thought when I read your OP last night was that you were simply trying to run away and escape from your shitty homelife.
I rather fear that joining The Army may not provide you with the ideal that you appear to be seeking.

I can be an excellent career move for an RN to go into the Army.

Going in as an officer, comparable pay, seeing the world, minimal (but not zero) chance of having your legs blown off in some middle eastern shit hole.

It's something I always fancied having a crack at when I was still on the wards, but my home situation was never favourable.

A few of my mates did though, and they certainly wouldn't choose differently if they had their time again.

Do TA stuff on weekends and then once you get bored of that, airsoft.

With the latter you can pick your own gear and have a lot more variety too! Laughing

Do an MRE Night where you and some mates hunker down and munch on rations while playing CODMWBFCSArMa421.6Source.

Jokes aside, quite a fair few of the instructors at my bike school have army backgrounds and they don't look any worse for wear. That said, the situation's probably changed a lot since their army days.

I meant the pricks in 10 Downing St.

Another big downside of the forces is you don't get to ride your bike whenever you want.

I did want to go in the Royal Engineers when I left school and who knows how that would of worked out. Probably not well I hate being told what to do.

When I was in the RAF, I got loads of time to use my bike. Think it was 26 days annual leave, plus public holidays, plus x4 48 hr passes, plus most weekends (as long as I wasn't on duty crew).
In Germany, we got 30 days annual, plus all the rest, plus German public holidays. That's a darn sight more time off than I get in a crappy warehouse job now.
