I was there last weekend (briefly)

Things I learnt in the four brief hours I was there:
1. "Coffeeshops" are nothing like I thought they would be.
2. Ordinary bars have a much more interesting clientele.
3. Jagermeister is overrated.

Didn't make it to the RLD; although spotted a couple of girls in a window by the canal, but didnt have time to stop.
Next time, maybe

Cafe's serve coffee

Coffeeshops serve "coffee"

Both stimulants but the cafe ones will wake you up in the morning and the coffeeshop ones will put you back to sleep!

We only parked up on Spuistraat and wandered around for an hour or two, went to a normal bar first (Cafe des Barones, if you know it ...), which was perfectly nice and populated with what seemed like local people (who popped outside to smoke joints or fags).

On the way back to the van, which we had parked up near "Humphreys" ... still on Spuistraat itself (I think) I stopped at two coffeeshops in an attempt to just get a hash brownie to take with me. By then it was late, we were both tired, and had not yet acquired a hotel room. Couldnt be bothered waiting for idiotic English stoners to make up their minds in the first one, but just down the road was a second place where I managed to get an expensive (i.e., ineffective) hash brownie. The coffeeshops were so generically alike that I wouldnt wear myself out going back for an extended period of time, other than to acquire something to take away with me to smoke (are you allowed to do that? Not sure ...)

I think I expected that they would be more like the "normal" bar, rather than like my living room circa 2004, full of teenage English boys with their mouths hanging open.

But I am looking forward to going back and spending more time there.
Cool Thumbs Up

I hadnt expected we were going to spend time there at all. We were all over the place all weekend, Breeda, Haarlem, managed to squeeze Amsterdam in there for literally 4 hours, then down to those southern islandy bits you have to access by going back thru Belgium Rolling Eyes and then back up to Utrecht, then back to UK ... so Amsterdam was a bit of a bonus Laughing

I know Spuistraat very well, my shop was one street over on Singel

problem is a lot of the "Normal" coffee shops are pretty generic and often similar menus
I tend to go to the off the beaten track ones that the locals use not the tourist traps
you wern't far from a couple of decent ones Abraxes is on that street though it is quite long
but if you seen girls I suspect the bottom end near Centraal

Oh Humphreys very posh Laughing

The second time I went was a Fri to Sun, I can't remember anything from breakfast time Saturday morning Thumbs Up

been years since I've been, used to have friends living on friedrich-heindrick straat

spent hours in a bar called the torenzicht, was full of dutch bikers, huge old guys with incredibly attractive young ladies sat on their laps, the place was so cool, with only one rule, all patrons must have a drink in their glass. Was amazing getting a round of beers there, the barman would pass his joint to you to smoke while he poured your beers.

And breakfast at bobbys bar, ran by an ex-pat, best place for a full english breakfast the morning after

One of my favourite coffeeshops in Amsterdam was Dampkrings, good weed, good tea & a cat called Bowie. Thumbs Up
There were some very nice ones in Harleem, which I recommend you go visit for the day, it was about half hour on train, if that.

My daughter* says that when she went a year or two ago, there was a good bar called Red Light Bar.

I have no idea where that might be ... Laughing

*(who doesn't believe me when I said I went to Amsterdam and didn't get stonkingly flat-line zombified - just as well I took a video to prove I was really there Laughing )

We didn't go in Humphreys* , we just parked the van outside, it was the first long-wheelbase-sized parking space we came across Laughing

*although now you say its posh, then of course I will have to go there next time I get back there

The girl we stayed with in Utrecht, says that her sister lives in something called "the snakehouse squat" (?) in Spuistraat. I did see some arty looking mural with a snake on our drive back out of town, so I assume that's it?

Couple of places you may like are "The Excalibur" and "The Other Place" both are run by the HA.
Edit
The Other Place has closed Excalabur (Turn your sound off!)

There are coffee shops more like 'normal' bars.
However Amsterdam is of course the capital of weed-tourism, so a lot more aimed at clichéd stoners.

Will partly depend what time you're around too and so on.

Useful to know, but these days I'd probably not be popular turning up there Laughing

Had a tab at Barney's, so much win.

Good coffeshops...Grey Area, Abraxas, Amnesia, Barneys, Greenhouse, Old Church, Barneys, Rokerij and Dampkring.

Pretend to be deaf when street dealers hassle you.

The trains and trams are free.

Smoke enough in the hotel that the reception smells of cannabis and get a free room upgrade.

Febo

Go walking around the rld in the evenings.

Tobacco now can't be smoked in almost all coffeshops, almost everywhere enforces with some discretion if you're not being too obvious about using a small amount.

my favourite hangout is Lost in Amsterdam, you can smoke weed though its a bar / pub you can openly smoke tobacco mixed joints
they serve beer in old fashioned beer barrel glasses out of the freezer so the glass is frosted
order food and they do the best coconut smoothie in Amsterdam
and has several crash area's to chill out in with lots of cushions and secluded corners
its on Nieuwendijk https://www.lostinamsterdam.com/index.html

Possibly a derp question, are clubs and things funny fuckers about what you're wearing like england?

I wear baggies and skate shoes majorly, may bring spare work loafers for the smarts

Just converted some money to euro, silly woman wouldn't let me go over withdrawal limit without a full driving license for ID, my provisional was not accepted, had a moan and was like are you sure that's right? would have made more sense if she said I needed a counterpart too
