So it's been a long time since I've updated this - it's been a bit hectic. We have had so many issues that have cropped up and so much stress. If you think it's a good idea to build a house then heed this warning.. it's the most stressful thing I've ever done. I've had moments where I've been so stressed I've had heart palpitations and had physical symptoms similar to flu - it's been hard. Money seems to just vanish in an instant and contractors will prove to you that they have no fucking clue what their doing.
I have also learned that you need to massage ego's to get people to do what you want them to, and don't give any money over up front - my mate/carpenter was in a real pickle - so I fronted him £1k in advance of works... guess what happened... he disappeared on me and I'm still badgering him to come and finish works.
I've been very close to violence a few times but managed to reign it in.
This update will likely be a bit more wordy as a lot has happened and I may have missed some photo opportunities.
The last picture you saw was the stairs going in, continuing from that I had to chuck insulation in-between stud work and put a vapour barrier on

The old man had a long piece of Oak slowly rotting away up on the farm. We needed a mantelpiece and I had an electric planer - after trimming back the shitty rotten bit I found some nice solid oak underneath so chucked it into the space. You can't see but the oak is 2x deep to give us enough overhang - we'd already factored the gap in the stud work to hold the oak beam. You can also see that plasterboards have gone up surrounding, just awaiting dry lining.

Just to backtrack slightly - I didn't explain in the last update the issues we had with the (original) plumber - might be interesting to some.
So my mate popped down - he was helping us with the plumbing/electrics/tiling. He took one look at the upstairs bathroom and started asking simple questions such as - where is the waste for the bathtub, where is the waste for the sink, why are the water feeds coming in at the wrong ends... the kind of questions that once highlighted you go "oh fuck, yeah, um... i dunno" (surprising what you miss when you're really busy) - He then started looking at all other plumbing and told me that the original plumber was a fuckwit who was going to run all the wastes etc. in plain site and track them around the room. My mate couldn't live with this so he decided to change it all around - wastes went into the wall cavity and joined the soil pipe out of sight. The bath waste went straight down through the floor and joined the soil between the joists and he also installed chrome plated water feeds which also came straight up through the floor and swapped position so that your head wouldn't be by the shitter while taking a bath.
In short he saved the fucking day!!!! and Original plumber is not getting paid - fuck him.
This is the dude!! You can see in the background that the white waste for the sink is going through the wall.

This leads onto flooring the bathroom:
Purchased some heavy duty Vinyl Flooring for bathroom - this was glued in with spray adhesive. Paid a bit more for the grain effect. We were going to go for tiles but this works much better with heat transference for under floor heating thus higher efficiency and less cost to heat house. I was against this idea to begin with as I thought it would be tacky but I'm quite happy with the result.
This is us attempting to put it down
https://i.imgur.com/xmUfFwh.jpg
Spraying the adhesive - I almost passed out from the fumes, things went wobbly there for a while.
https://i.imgur.com/QQCktq0.jpg
Flooring laid - holes cut. Measured these cuts like 20 times, one fuck up here and I can kiss goodbye to the whole roll of flooring which was £350
https://i.imgur.com/YFtU1vq.jpg
Realised that the bath needed bath feet - bought some cast iron bad boys that have a moulded eagle claw on the bottom of them. To install we needed bolts - bolts were too long so he's trimming them down to size. (As you can see in the background I've started dry lining the living room)

Toilet officially installed - I can now legitimately take a shit as all connected up

Rain Water/ drinking water Festivities:
So I needed to install rain water drainage and the feed to the drinking water.
The drinking water was a pain - we had no pressure in the system. Had to call out the water board and they said that the stop tap is getting 3 bar so it wasn't their problem. They explained that I had to connect a new pipe myself and take the feed to the house. So I did - should have checked guidance for this first really but fuck it - can't be that hard. I also did the rainwater drainage - should have done this all in one go with soil drainage but I didn't - error! Anyway I hired some toys for the weekend and vowed to get the drainage sorted no matter how long it took. My brother joined me for the weekend - he's much better at using the 360 than I am so he was given that job.

https://i.imgur.com/Bce5Rb8.jpg
We started with clearing all rubble and muck that was piled up which had come from the house timber frame foundations for the slab
https://i.imgur.com/GkgAIEI.jpg
Then started trenching
https://i.imgur.com/yXcA6X1.jpg
Told my brother to watch out for the soil pipe - gave him a general idea where it could be - but he forgot - you can't see in this picture but he went through the pipe just where the blue bag is. This pic was taken after we removed the broken bits. (last thing we needed)
https://i.imgur.com/4F0WsPU.jpg
This is him measuring up a new piece to join up both ends.
https://i.imgur.com/CvaSy5v.jpg
Annoyingly I can't seem to find a lot of the images showing the main bulk of work getting done - just imagine trenches being dug, soil pipe and water pipe getting laid and it being back filled to look pretty.
Next up was correcting a mistake id made in the past. We connected to the main sewers incorrectly. So had to dig it all back up and also had to break through the many layers of concrete id poured...not fun.
https://i.imgur.com/CvaSy5v.jpg
Difficult to see a sense of scale here but this hole is approx. 2meters deep - we had to connect to the sewer right down at the bottom level - the blue bag indicates the location where the pervious pipe went in
https://i.imgur.com/3wcKBfg.jpg
This is what we ended up with - Rodding hole through the mid point and waste at the bottom.

Drainage being sorted around the back
https://i.imgur.com/ZQllRYV.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/dbD8lwO.jpg
Next up was connecting the water pipe to the house. As you can see in the following picture we terminated the pipe just outside the building This needs to go in under the house so more digging was required. This is from the outside
https://i.imgur.com/tqND0fN.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/HDugeB8.jpg
This is from the inside - using a jack hammer to get through the stone - it took all day
https://i.imgur.com/YTg5AnE.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/11sQDoy.jpg
Pipe is through - we used a slow bend and filled with very thick insulation - with the water pipe coming through the middle to stop freezing. As you can see it was dark by this point so we were working with a head torch.

Lots of the wall have now been dry lined and painted - also electrics 2nd fix going in

I've had loads of stupid things like this... original plumber put a pipe up to the attic for a header tank - trouble is we specified we weren't having one. So after I sacked him (for various other issues) and got someone else to finish, we turned the water on and water came pissing out of the ceiling.... (this should have gone into the next update but thought id share now).
Also had a sparky change the position of light switches without asking a he thought he knew better -
Me:"uh, no mate the door opens that way so the light switch will be behind the door"
Him"well you can change the way the door opens"
Me:"NO MATE - DO IT AGAIN"
Him:"Well you will have to pay for the extra work to move it"
Me: "I ain't paying you shit, and you're changing it - you're at fault not me".
Makes me want to scream.

Wow, what a herculean effort! Looking mega!!
You'll be super chuffed with it finished....either that, or locked up in a nut house having committed serial murders of contractors. At least your brother can help bury the many, many bodies
9 stacked electric sockets on one wall, holy crap that's a lot of devices. |

Looking good, nice to see the place coming together.
Plumber story: mate had a new boiler fitted in a new kitchen extension, marked out the wall, wrote "Boiler" on it, and had the pipes coming to the right place.
Plumber turned up and knocked a hole through a different wall for the flue and hung the boiler over there. He then asked why the pipes were on the other wall.
