A while I was knocked off my Aprilia Pegaso Strada, no lasting damage to me thank god but the bike was written off. So the question is, what do I get to replace it? My budget is maximum £2500 and I use a bike to commute in and out of London on a daily basis, 40 mile round trip.

Here's some thoughts on the Pegaso:

Liked

• Upright riding position.
• Good acceleration up to 60mph.
• The fact that it was 'different' so stood out a bit.

Didn't like

• Poor fuel economy.
• Horrible vibes.
• Chuggy fuelling between 3-4K rpm.
• Hard to manoeuvre through traffic at slow speed.

So ideally I'm after a smooth, fuel efficient, easy to handle bike with an upright riding position and some poke when needed all for a max budget of £2.5K.

Any thoughts?

BMW F650gs? (The older one with the single engine)

Same engine as in your pegaso, but fuel injected - mine gave crazy fuel economy.
Thumbs Up

Charlene.

The "new" G650GS is fairly vibey at speed, so I'd want to test ride an F650GS to see if you can live with the pounding.

I'd be looking at a twin. I'd say V-Strom, but sellers are pretty optimistic in what they're asking and £2500 won't get you anything newish or low mileage. You can just about get a Versys in budget.

But asa serious suggestion: what about a new NC700X? It's being replaced by the NC750X, so there should be some old stock or pre-registered ones being shifted. Low rate finance, 80mpg+, you could save a considerable amount in fuel depending how bad the Pegaso was.

Sat on both 700X and 750X at the last couple of MCN Londons and have to say did feel very nice, see loads of em about in town too so that must stand for something... but might be stretching the budget a little! I do like the wee-strom but think the tail is blooming ugly. I know that's fussy but what can I say.

One thought I had, might sound a little mad, was to go for a Ninja 250r, yes different riding position, but there's something about the high rev ceiling and general nippiness that appeals to me. But that is going in a different direction admittedly.

Cheap to run, easy to get parts, no lower fairings to spoil engine access, and ideally of a well proven older model design are what I'd ideally chuck on the wish list for an everyday commuter that is never going to be your pride and joy.

Diversion 600?
CBF600?
XJ6?
Fazer ( the 1st gen ones are very cheap, and much better value now than a Blandit).
ER6?
Suzuki V-strom 650?

£2500 down = maybe £3K to pay = under £100 a month over 3 years.

How bad is your fuel economy now? If it's 40mph, then 800 miles a month at 80mpg will save you ~ £60 over what you're paying just now.

I wouldn't normally advocate buying new for economy, but the NC700/750s are significantly thrifty, and you'd be starting with a fresh set of everything, a warranty, and no MOT for 3 years.

The FI FZ6 I have is pretty good. It's a 09 model, but you can pick up older ones (still FI) in your price range. Apart from the fact the fuel light starts flashing super early, I got over 180 miles from the tank the other week. It's a 19.4l tank and I still had over a litre left when I filled up.

Yeah it was ~40mpg the way I rode it Razz Yeah that's a good point, would offset the monthly finance cost quite well. Ok you may have convinced me...

It's not a very different riding position, it's still an upright seat position, just the handlebars are a little lower.
I've owned a ninja 250r and I've also had a BMW f650.
I liked the height of the beemer, used to feel like a very 'lumpy' bike though. It was a dream down the lanes, but a slug at junctions. The little ninja used to fly everywhere and was a very easy ride, comfortable for little me Smile It used to feel a little like a kite though. Felt like it could be blown over in a cross-wind. It never was of course, not even close, just my general feeling for it.

I also have an er6. That has been my 'constant' bike.
Can't say anything bad about it, because it goes as fast and as well as I need it to.
I liked mine, but having 2 bikes it felt like a toy compared to the other 'grown-up' bike, I sold it and got the bmw. Then I sold the BMW and got an mt-03.

thought it was just mine! fuel light flashes a 140 miles (I like the trip counter that pings up when you go to reserve by the way, thanks Yamaha) yet after doing ten miles on reserve I can only get 14 litres in??

by the way, do you fill yours up to the neck for that 18 litres or dribble in the extra litre or so to take it right to the top?

I fill it to the absolute top every time. It's roughly 10 miles per litre the way I ride it, makes it easy to know how much longer I can ride for with the light blinking at me!

I've just bought a 750x, gets delivered tomorrow.

I paid £1400 deposit, and its £92 a month, with a £1500 final payment after 3 years.

with a £2500 deposit, you're probably looking at about £60 - £65 a month

PCP I think its called.

https://www.honda.co.uk/motorcycles/offers/nc750x/

You can give the bike back after 3 years, or pay £1500.

Nothing to stop you making bigger payments so the final payment is less, but at 0%, you're better off just saving the cash in the bank

Really, with todays interest rates? Doubt there is much in it even on 0% finance Laughing
