right so here goes, im 17 and i have my cbt and have been riding a Yamaha dt125 for nearly a year now, but im not sure what license i can get? everywhere i look has different choices, the government website says i can only get a a1 licence but my local test center tutor says i can take a test and ride bikes as big as 500cc, so could anyone tell me what licence i could get, that would be great. thanks in advance!

At 17 you can do an A1 test which restricts you to 125cc, prettymuch same as CBT except you can tear off the L plates, use the motorway and carry a pillion.

Once you reach 19 you can do the A2 test which limits you to 35kw (46bhp), you can restrict a bike with up to double the stock bhp and use that.

Then either two years after you pass your A2 OR when you reach 24 you can do the A test (DAS) and ride whatever you like.

As Ben says, A1 license;
-125 without L's
-motorway riding
-pillions

Then after two years you can do the A2 Thumbs Up

"Test" centre? Eh?

If you mean training centre, I'd give them a wide swerve at at least 50kph. You're stuck on a 125cc (making no more than 11kW and no more than 0.1kW/kg) until you're 19. Sorry, no exceptions[*].

Government source.

You can rock up and do your A1 tests on your own bike, without any training. Importantly, this starts the clock on your 2 year "new driver" probationary period during which your license will be automatically revoked if you get 6 points. Riding as much of that out on a 125 as possible might be to your benefit.

There's nothing particularly hard about the tests, and plenty of people pass then without training.

[*] Exception: if you join the army.
