Yes. They are not allowed to do reading when it is across an oncoming flow of traffic. So if it's parked up on your side of the road it's after people going the same way as you so slow down. They can take readings across lanes of traffic which is going the same way as you, like on motorways the camera can be by the hard shoulder and take reading from all lanes.

And as it seems slightly on topic, if you're worried about speed traps get yourself a radar and laser detector like the one I have on eBay Smile

If you're not sure which side of the road it's going to be getting, brake first and then have a think. Laughing

Thumbs Up

Why can you not get cars going on the opposite side of the road?

Humberside park up on the A63 and get cars from both East and West bound carridgeways. Shocked

As far as I'm aware they can do you on either side. The laser can read your speed coming towards it or going away from it, and since it's a precision tool (the beam is only 4 inches across at 100 yards) it can pick out a speeding vehicle even in heavy traffic, something radar traps can't do.
It may be that they're not supposed to get motorists on the opposite carriageway, as above, I would personally slow down just in case!
90% of laser trap prosecutions are taken off the front of an oncoming vehicle, but bikes are taken from the back generally as you go away from them, so they've got your plate on film.

Hi

If I remember correctly those people who got jailed for speeding last year on a dual carraigeway were got by a mobile speed camera parked on the opposite carraigeway.

However as I understand it the fixed Gatso brand cameras are not homologated for taking pictures of oncoming vehicles.

All the best

Keith

A small strip of black insulating tape can prove invaluable. But only if your reg. number has an L or an F on it

I was speaking to a guy at a rally who says he stops when he sees a 'safety camera' van and wanders over. If it is manned by a civillian rather than a copper (most of them are), he stands in front of the camera. They are on a public highway after all. Very Happy

Adopting a "zig-zag'' pattern MAY get you off if you are coming in way too hot as they actually have to aim the thing at a reflective surface (remember that lasers are highly focused and directional). They are pretty much stuck with the nuberplate on a bike, make it hard for them by giving those bars a giggle.

My plate is LF 02 ... I can't do that, can I? Confused EF, or LE, or even EE - are these plate numbers, or am I missing the point slightly?
