My sisters ZZR600 is getting on a bit IMO. It's 1998 about 40k on the clocks and flies through the MOT each year without any hassle. The only "gucchi kit" fitted is one of the Shindegen mosfet R/R's to replace the deaded stock one.

That said it has, to me, the early signs of becoming a little past its best. False neutrals in the box are occurring more and more often, the clutch feels a little clattery when you release it slowly. The brakes stop but could do with an overhaul to improve the feel, valve clearances are almost without a doubt due at least an inspection. Starter solenoid jams closed and needs replacement - had a fun episode the other day when it was turning over for a good 20 seconds, despite me hitting the killswitch and turning the ignition off and removing the key.... Shocked

At a guess, I'd assume the suspension could do with a service/fluid change, if for no other reason than the age of the bike.

So all in, I'd guess you could easily spend a good few hundred on parts, just to get it up to a good state of repair, with me doing the work for free. I'd have to ponce about over a period of time weather permitting (no garage Sad ) and the rest of the bike would still be an old(er) bike.

Or is it more economical to sell the ZZR, chuck in the money that would have been spent on parts plus a little extra and get a newer, lower milage model?

Also suggestions for similar bikes? My sister can handle the ZZR fine on the move, but she struggles manhandling it around due to the weight, a full-sports 6 would be much lighter no?

Sounds like she's had the best out of it, and now's the time to punt it.

It sounds like it's simply in need of a bit of maintenance. Why not cost up how much to get it running tip top again then decide from there after looking about. Besides, surely she should decide?

Having weighed up the information supplied, cross referenced it with my own experience and used the valuable resource that is the knowledge of my friends and acquaintances I would have to request that you supply some pictures of your sister's tits and gash in order to make a full reply.

Yours in anticipation,

Mario

Most more modern sports 600's are lighter than the ZZR 600

Mine is coming up 35000 and still going strong (ok, fork seals appear to be starting to go) and has been commuted on by myself and the previous owner on pretty much the same journey for the past few years all year round.

whenever the gearbox / engine feels a bit grouchy a service sorts it out for me, my brakes are nissin's off a fire blade (a common mod) which could be worth considering as the standard brakes weren't up to much from new

worth checking out https://zzr-international.co.uk as they're a helpful bunch with keeping zzr's running.

The ZZR 600 isn't exactly "crouched over" material.
