So, it's time for new tyres and I was going to get the Michelin Pilot Road 3's, however it looks like a newer 4's are out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGD6HLdNcW4

It works out about £24 more for the set.

Anyone got these? Is it worth going for something newer over the tested RP3's?

I had PR3's fitted a couple of years ago and they are still going strong, they look almost like new. I will get the 4's when it comes time to change as the write ups seem just as good.

The 4's don't have the same edge grip as the 3's according to that video.

Mine have done just under 10,000. The front may do a little bit more, but getting both changed tomorrow.

True. The 3s were 80% medium, 10% soft on each edge. The 4s are 20%hard, 40% medium on each edge.

They do. He has given the percentage which makes up a single edge. Multiply by 2.

The Pilot 2 was a great tyre for the road. Not sure the pilot 3 improved on it except for very wet condtions. Can't imagine how they've made the 4 better.

It does seem a little odd that they're bringing these tyres out so soon after the pilot 3s. Hopefully this will have a knock-on effect on the prices of the older models.

Exactly. I have PR2s on my bike as looking at the actual tyres they are virtually the same except the PR3s have extra grooves to allow water to run off.

https://img2.findthebest.com/sites/default/files/2640/media/images/t2/Michelin_Pilot_Road_3_563194_i0.jpg

It cost me £191 for my PR2s including fitting but would have cost me £249 for PR3s.

These people are really good. Free P&P if the order is over £150 makes them worthwhile Thumbs Up

Opps thought I added that, gone for the Threes again. Going for what I know and trust.

From what I've heard - the PR4's have sacrificed a bit of grip to favour long-life (in essence).

To my mind, PR2/3 are for people who are sick of getting 3k out of Pilot powers and want 6/7k from a sports tyre.

When the yanks get 11k+ from a PR2/3, they should stop being faggots and just buy PR1, half the price and they ride slow enough to not notice.

But people want the latest and greatest because they have the latest greatest machine. Having all the marketing giving the tyre a glowing reference gives confidence.

PR2's are more than most people will ever need. Good in both dry and wet. Although. The original Powers seem just as good in the wet to me !

Pilot Road 3's are really really good, my only gripe is they don't have the front end feel of a sports tyre when really cranked over.

Brilliant as a road tyre though!

I think that was my conclusion too, so I've gone for the PR3s. I was quite happy to pay £24 more, but didn't see the point.

Main reason I bought PR3's in Feb '13 was because I was a student, the initial higher price was made up for by getting as many miles as I can for my money plus I spent a lot of miles on damp/soaked roads. They lasted up until summer where I just whacked a sticky part worn on and then I got a donated a free used PR3 to get me by until I got paid. Still got the front PR3 on after 3 rears Razz

Fantastic tyres too, although I found they moved a bit when cranked over which felt like small slides and made me pussy out a fair bit until I got used to it and felt what an actual slide was like.

A mate on a 929 just did a track day at Oulton on PR4's and can vouch for them.

Americans might aswell get cheap hard chinese shite from what I've seen, they spend most of their time on the grid layout roads. Atleast our town roads still have bends Laughing

I just had PR4's fitted to my Blackbird. Compared to the Bridgestone BT021 that were on there before they are much better. I commute all weathers and so wanted something with long life so will be interesting to see how well these hold up as they claim 20% more life than PR3s. Fitted price was £300 for the pair but so far I am really pleased with them but only a couple of hundred miles in so far in the last week.
