Well, my #1 cylinder has been playing up - I wasn't able to screw the spark plug in very tight, and the previous plug that came out brought a load of aluminium thread out with it.

It needs repairing. I took it to a local garage today who said they could do it with the engine still together (out of the bike), they were unable to, said they couldn't get the tool in.

Is this going to be possible without taking the head off? I don't want to open up a can of worms by taking the head off.

I've certainly achieved a sucessful helicoil on a car (ali head) without resorting to dismantling and I can be a bit hamfisted. I would have thought a proficient mechanic would manage without too much ado...

On the other side of the coin, a proficient mechanic would just suggest replacing the head with one from one of the many internet breakers....

Well the head is indeed coming off now unfortunately.

Pattern gaskets OK?

I rebuilt a TL engine using pattern gaskets, the base gaskets would not seal. Used OE ones and they were fine. You pays your money and take a chance.

Easy enough job to timesert the solid much better version of a helicoil I don dozens with the head on

The head is now off. I need a head gasket ASAP. Nowhere can get any for the weekend! I want a shop where I can just go in and purchase one. Unfortunately this is not possible. Nothing more annoying when somebody claims to stock something but they just order it in. Why would I pay them to do something I can do myself?!

Don't mind paying more so I can go and get it from the shop. Alas. Do M&P do next day delivery, anybody know?

Many main dealers (or even independents) don't keep stock, it's all about 'just-in-time' ordering and keeping the asset level low. Once went to Honda for a few new sump crush washers. I remember the days when the parts department was a buy in a smock who'd you'd describe what you want, he'd trundle into the back, open a few draws and come back and place the item(s) you needed onto the counter (yes I am that sad/old).
