Okay guys, new member here

I will be taking my A2 test soon and was wondering what bike to get. Now here is the good part, because of my royal marine training that I will be undertaking I have £16,000 to spend on a bike, kit and insurance. I would like to get a naked, street fighter or cafè racer bike that is restricted. I don't care about people saying that restriction is bad because it is not going to get ridden a lot to start off with.

So far the bikes I like the look of are
MV Agusta Brutale 675 (can be A2 compliant, checked with DVLA)
Ducati monster 796
Triumph street triple r (70kw version)

Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated

I don't see how a Brutale can be A2 compliant when it produces over 105bhp?

You have a very big budget but it may not be worth splashing it all just yet… if it's your first ever bike that is, there is a chance you may drop it. It happens a lot to riders with their first bike and it would be painful to drop an expensive bike. Maybe it's worth riding around on a cheaper bike before moving up onto something more expensive if you have no experience.

As for which bikes to ride within that budget is every A2 compliant bike lol. So as said above, take a read through all the bike you can ride on our license and short list a few bikes and then test ride (if possible), read reviews and ask on here for advice as to which one is best.

Plus DVLA go by Kw now.

Sub-category A2 (standard motorcycle)

Sub-category A2 motorcycles used for tests must:

be a solo motorcycle
be at least 395cc
be between 25kW and 35kW engine power
have a power to weight ratio no more than 0.2kW/kg

If the engine power of the motorcycle has been restricted to fit sub-category A2, the normal unrestricted power can’t be more than double its new restricted power.

If you have an A2 restricted motorcycle, you must bring proof of the restriction to your test, or it will be cancelled. It must be on headed notepaper from a main dealer, official importer or recognized specialist, and must show the motorcycle’s registration number.

that bike is 81Kw so don't think it can be restricted

Edit (legally)

Make a short-list and at least sit on some to check the riding position. I would get something A2 compliant without restriction, which you won't mind dropping and then move up to something else when you get your full license. What you like now might not be what you'll like then and you'll get the fun of choosing a new bike twice Smile

I have been around on a few 125's on the road and a couple 250's off road.

MV Agusta supply on demand a 70kw version specifically for our new laws. The piston, stroke and bore have all been changed and cannot be changed to the original without a specific tool that MV have and have patented. (I've been speaking to a few dealers) the 70kw is then restricted via a mapping down to the legal 35kw.

All I have to say is I am jealous and buy whatever you like as you can afford it Thumbs Up you lucky....

Definately go and take some time in showrooms [not that i'm recommending you buy from them] to see whats comfortable for you though.

With that sort of budget I still probably wouldn't get 'the best bike' going - get something thats suitable and does the job and blow the rest of the cash on tyres/fuel to travel the world etc Razz

Patenting's got nothing to do with it - it only concerns marketing of someone's product, but I get where you're coming from. Stroke and bore need new crank and cylinders both of which are a big deal to swap back for de-restriction but the easiest way to do it would be with cams and ECU.
