When I rebuilt the carbs on my Bandit 400 (one of the many known weak points of the bike) I managed to snap the end off the enrichment circuit plunger, this meant that cylinder 4 wouldn't fire until the bike had been running for about five minutes. Whilst I was happy that it actually fired on four cylinders eventually, as soon as I started it up from cold for my dad he didn't seem too impressed especially as it was relatively warm at the time, best get it sorted then...

The offending plunger. Please don't ask, the shagpile bench is not for sale!

Arseholes, this looks fiddly. Luckily I had a collet the same size as the plunger so that was straightforward, pin chuck and 2.5mm drill bit to the right.

Fitted up in the collet, ready for action.

Drill bit in the tailstock, ready to drill.

Splendid! Slightly eccentric due to a run-out issue somewhere but good enough for this job.

Tap the 2.5mm hole out to M3x0.5mm, no chance I'm trying to cut an M3 internal thread on the lathe, I'm at my limit as it is...

https://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv258/L339EFX/DSCF2925.jpg

Sorted! That could have gone a lot worse.

Back home with choke in the off position.

https://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv258/L339EFX/DSCF2928.jpg

And with the choke on...

So that's my first productive job with my new lathe, very basic but I'm happy that I didn't balls anything up and hopefully I'll have better cold starting when they go back on.

Feel free to stick any lathe/mill/bobble hat related posts in here for inspiration, for anyone thinking of getting a lathe then get one bought, I've been fobbing it off for years but since having it I've got stack of things lined up for it when my abilities improve.

Tl;Dr - Lathe n00b bodges carb back together.

Good job, indeed. You really want to buy a centre drill, which will help to prevent your eccentric drilling issue. Use this to spot the workpiece first; the following drill bit will start off in the correct position, instead of wandering over the face of the workpiece until it bites somewhere off-centre.

In fact, a light facing cut would have been ideal, but that's just splitting hairs.

For the record the term is turning rather than lathing.

Nicely done anyway, and a nice idea for a thread too. Thumbs Up

Triffic job Lee, and well done on the use of collets instead of chucks. They offer far superior truth in runout as well as not marring the workpiece. Looks like the collet is a bit proud of the spindle nose which would suggest it's slightly bell-mouthed and account for the runout. Either that or the brass plunger is slightly bent. Looks like someone has committed sacrilege by grinding a bit out of your lathe bed for extra swing Sad

mintex - Ta Smile

Bru - Cheers, that's the kind of advice I was hoping to get from posting this up. I have a centre drill that I'll stick in my drill box, didn't even cross my mind at the time! Good call on the facing cut too, all very good points that will be remembered.

c_dug - Turning, drilling or boring? Mr. Green

Pete - Cheers, happy for my first stab at something although it was a little fine for my taste! Looking at the collets they are quite a bit bigger so I suspect they may be from a different lathe altogether, downer. The scallop out of the bed is ground out, I never looked at it as I assumed it was where someone had chucked something up and twatted it so it's not as bad as I first thought!

Aff - If that makes you cringe, wait till you see what I balls up with it next!

Xenocide - The only grips I will use, I have a small family of them Smile
