I've recently moved from my medium sized town up to Sheffield, so I called my insurance provider, Bennett's, change the address and now my premium has increased by more than double. The only other changes made to the policy were where I'm parking the bike and the fact that I've been promoted at work.

Is this normal? I'm thinking of changing providers but before I start spending the hours looking into a cheaper premium I want to understand if this is normal or if it's just because I've moved to a rougher area, are they just profiteering from my situation because they think I won't bother changing providers?. Personally I think a jump from £23 per month to £63 is a lot for my 125cc that I ride very occasionally. Any thoughts on this? There's a cancellation fee of £50 but I'm thinking it might be worth it just so I'm not ripped off for the rest of the year.

£23 to £63 a month is a massive jump, but it could be that the deem the area more at risk. I'd run a quick quote on GoCompare and see what they're coming out at for a new quote at your new address and see if any of the other Insurers come back with a similar price.

Why not run new quotes on confused or whichever meerkat site you fancy and swap from one to the other address - see what difference there is between the SAME insurers, ie don't compare another insurer to your current one - all have different area rates

So bike parked up (on street ?) a lot in a high risk area.....

Some more bad new for you.

When you took your policy out, Bennetts paid the underwriter the full premium for the year. They loaned you that money and that loan is what you're paying back. You're not paying for the insurance, that's a separate issue.

If you cancel, then the underwriter may refund some of that policy, or they may not. If it's outside 14 days, nothing compels them to give back a penny.

Bennetts will then subtract this refund (if any) from the outstanding amount of the loan, add on their £50 mugging, and tell you that you owe them that, in full, immediately.

It sounds like you've already agreed to the policy change, so you'll owe them ((£63 x months remaining) + £50 - £refund). You may have a 14 day cooling off period on that change though, so if you're going to bail, do it now.

Sorry, not the answer that you wanted. Verify this with Bennetts before taking any decision.

That list is a joke....

My mother lives in what they consider the highest risk area..... Only problem they have had in 10 years is muppets parking cars while going on holiday and trying to avoid the airport parking charges.

I agree, that list has been doing the rounds for years, and I've never seen the source or an indication as to how up-do-date it is - if it was ever accurate to begin with.

You can try putting your postode in here but that's got the same problem.

Two areas where we've lived in the last 10+ years (CF10 & CF23) both show up as F* ....and they've been some of the quietest suburban areas I know of.

Even my parents living 25 miles away (in CF34) are D*

Those area assessments are a joke i.m.o.

The answer is yes, because without insurance we are considered a danger on the highways. Bloody annoying. They can bleed us dry just because we choose to ride/drive. Evil or Very Mad Thumbs Down

Best rule of thumb is not to make any changes to any policy (at all) because despite everything being at a click of a button, it costs money to make any change to documents...which is utter bull.

Let your policy ride its natural course, i.e. run out, before getting a new one.

Always look for a new quote when your renewal comes in, because the cheeky gits will expect you to stay with them, purely due to some people thinking they cannot be bothered to look for a different provider. It pays to look around. Thumbs Up

Changing my car this year was interesting, last year paid the policy in full. This year trying to cancel 2 weeks or so early (after trading the car in) and needing to free up the no claims bonus (already maximum) cost us an extra £14 or something.

Mugged off? Yes. But hey - we know insurance companies are mug off agents.

It costs £35 to modify a policy ( eg change address). Even if the cost to print and post the amended paperwork is a nice round fiver that leaves the nice admin staff earning the company £30 for what? a five minute call? Ten tops? ) £180 per hour. And that's not including the kick back they get for us having to use the non regional phone number.
When you complain they say it's so only the people who masks changes pay to do so. What, £180 per hour?

I live in Sheffield, parson cross( very rough in some areas but they all got the same S5 postcode afaik, my immediate area is not too bad)

My insurance on a bandit 1200 f/c with pillion is only £49 a month, I only passed my test 6week ago. So I think you are being hammered. I'm also with bennets

Bikesure are marketing 3 month policies "starting at £32".

So, how much does it really cost to set up or modify a policy?

Give that insurance in mandatory, and that keeping details up to date is always a requirement of that mandatory contract, surely there must be some quango or regulator out there drooling to get their gums into this issue?
